First Verse Genesis 9 World English Bible (WEB) “9 God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and replenish the earth. 2 The fear of you and the dread of you will be on every animal of the earth, and on every bird of the sky. Everything that moves along the ground, and all the fish of the sea, are delivered into your hand. 3 Every moving thing that lives will be food for you. As I gave you the green herb, I have given everything to you. 4 But flesh with its life, that is, its blood, you shall not eat. 5 I will surely require accounting for your life’s blood. At the hand of every animal I will require it. At the hand of man, even at the hand of every man’s brother, I will require the life of man. 6 Whoever sheds man’s blood, his blood will be shed by man, for God made man in his own image. 7 Be fruitful and multiply. Increase abundantly in the earth, and multiply in it.”
“Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth”.. What do you make of this?
https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H6509&t=KJV fruitful means “to bear fruit (literally or figuratively):—bear, bring forth (fruit), (be, cause to be, make) fruitful, grow, increase.”
https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H7235&t=KJVרָבָה ” râbâh, raw-baw’; a primitive root; to increase (in whatever respect):—(bring in) abundance (× -antly), archer (by mistake for H7232), be in authority, bring up, × continue, enlarge, excel, exceeding(-ly), be full of, (be, make) great(-er, -ly, × -ness), grow up, heap, increase, be long, (be, give, have, make, use) many (a time), (any, be, give, give the, have) more (in number), (ask, be, be so, gather, over, take, yield) much (greater, more), (make to) multiply, nourish, plenty(-eous), × process (of time), sore, store, thoroughly, very.” equally interesting. I hae associated these verses largely with reproducing physically. But the original language leaves immense room for much broader application and meaning
Similar to what Adam and Eve received.
28 And God blessed them [granting them certain authority] and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subjugate it [putting it under your power]; and rule over (dominate) the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living thing that moves upon the earth.” Amp
Rob
Gen 1 vs 28 by the way.
Rob
I believe that this instruction/blessing comes to us and that we are called to live in accordance with these things. What do you think?
2 The fear and the terror of you shall be [instinctive] in every animal of the land and in every bird of the air; and together with everything that moves on the ground, and with all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hand. Amp
Fascinating!!
Rob
I was just thinking about this. Bacteria move… I am fairly convinced that we have authority over these. Not sure about viruses other thant that the verses clearly say we are no longer subject to the beggarly elements of this world and we are no longer subject to the dominion of darkness. Seeing as there was no sickness, no capacity for viruses and bacteria to cause harm to Adam and Eve, then it follows that post cross and resurrection that we ought to be presently immune from them now. Heavenly Father, that the revelation “rhema” of these things would be so settled in our hearts and minds that fear and doubt would be left with no foothold at all. In Jesus Christ’s name.
Agreed! KC
Romans 8:37 King James Version (KJV) “37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
So fear of any creature is in a way a mark of not understanding the covenants and reality that God has positioned us in. I am thinking of mosquitos, mice and spiders and really all other “pests”.
Yes that sure seems like we should not have any fear, because everything is subject to us. Rom 8:37 amp ….”we are more than conquerors and gain an overwhelming victory through Him who loved (so much that He died for us). So it seem like now it is because of and through Him that we are conquerors.
Wendy
Good morning!! In the amplified bible it says “populate the earth abundantly and multiply in it” But also could it mean, bear the fruit that you are, that you are holy and know God, so bear that fruit and multiply that in the earth.
Wendy
Yes the ‘fruit ‘ of Yeshua was to duplicate himself bringing MANY sons to glory. KC
So thinking both spiritual children and physical children. That definitely broadens the scope of this passage.
Good morning.. a little late jumping in here KC
“3 Every moving thing that lives will be food for you. As I gave you the green herb, I have given everything to you. 4 But flesh with its life, that is, its blood, you shall not eat. 5 ” There are some who prohibit meat and animals like pork.. this verse seems to contradict this. My personal theory is that God forbade pork, shellfish etc while mankind was “subject” to the beggarly elements of this world as bacteria and viruses etc “had” past tense, the ability to really harm man in his fallen state. I believe that potentially we are restored to the freedom given here to Noah and his descendants to eat of everything but the blood. If this is so, this would explain why Jesus said to Peter it was now ok to eat the things formerly called unclean. A thought anyways. I would never encourage anyone to eat something that would hurt their conscience to eat.
It’s always been interesting to me though that God created us so that all our physical needs of nutrition can be met by just eating plants. Meat was permitted or introduced after the fall.
KC
Agreed on all points.
Wendy
Good morning KC!!!
v5-6 is one that I don’t think I have ever fully registered before “5 I will surely require accounting for your life’s blood. At the hand of every animal I will require it. At the hand of man, even at the hand of every man’s brother, I will require the life of man. 6 Whoever sheds man’s blood, his blood will be shed by man, for God made man in his own image. ” God is not going to allow the murder of any person without requiring the life of the man who takes it. Thank God for the blood of Jesus. I remember being in university and having discussions about when life starts in the womb as a non-believer. This verse here shed incredible clarity to my own heart.
Do you think this is saying that whatever we do against a man we do against God?
Yes I believe that we do it to God and ourselves.. harming or blessing as we are all interconnected. KC
The verses in Matthew 25;41-46, seems to say that whatever we do to man it is as if we do it to God. Yikes. Those verses have always kind of bothered me. Probably good that they do. LOL

Next passage from Genesis 9 “8 Again, God said to Noah and his sons:
9 I am going to make a solemn promise to you and to everyone who will live after you. 10 This includes the birds and the animals that came out of the boat. 11 I promise every living creature that the earth and those living on it will never again be destroyed by a flood.
12-13 The rainbow that I have put in the sky will be my sign to you and to every living creature on earth. It will remind you that I will keep this promise forever. 14 When I send clouds over the earth, and a rainbow appears in the sky, 15 I will remember my promise to you and to all other living creatures. Never again will I let floodwaters destroy all life. 16 When I see the rainbow in the sky, I will always remember the promise that I have made to every living creature. 17 The rainbow will be the sign of that solemn promise.
18 Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, came out of the boat. Ham later had a son named Canaan. 19 All people on earth are descendants of Noah’s three sons.
vs 9-10. It is very interesting how the whole planet and every animal is impacted by man’s obedience or man’s sin. It would follow that the state of the world around is an external expression of the walk and talk of God’s people. This means our choices and lifestyles have a far greater impact than perhaps we often like to consider????
Absolutely.. I don’t believe we make any choices that don’t impact someone or something in all of creation… KC
Even before I knew God, I knew the rainbow signified something good.. something of God. I used to chase after rainbows and see them as omens of good changes coming. Now I realize it wasn’t about the rainbow, it was about the Creator who placed it in the sky. So interesting now to realize that truly that rainbow was a promise of better things to come.
Again, I see this idea that God places a much greater value on being spiritually “alive” then being physically alive. vs 18 talks about all of us are now descended from this one family.. With a righteous patriarch and yet we see the pattern seemingly repeat again even with the 3 sons of Noah. And very interesting to see that the blessings and or curses of their actions impacted the entirety of the genealogy that follows.
vs “20 Noah farmed the land and was the first to plant a vineyard. 21 One day he got drunk and was lying naked in his tent. 22 Ham entered the tent and saw him naked, then went back outside and told his brothers. 23 Shem and Japheth put a robe over their shoulders and walked backwards into the tent. Without looking at their father, they placed it over his body.
24 When Noah woke up and learned what his youngest son had done, 25 he said,
“I now put a curse on Canaan!
He will be the lowest slave
of his brothers.
26 I ask the Lord my God
to bless Shem
and make Canaan his slave.
27 I pray that the Lord
will give Japheth
more and more land
and let him take over
the territory of Shem.
May Canaan be his slave.”
28 Noah lived three hundred fifty years after the flood 29 and died at the age of nine hundred fifty.”
LOL. I had never realized that Noah was the first to plant a vineyard and to discover wine. No wonder he overdid it. I wonder how this ties into the communion elements?
What was Ham thinking to immediately respond by ‘telling’ his brothers? I don’t think his brothers thought much of his response because they immediately sought to honour and bring ‘covering’ to their father .. where Ham seemed to want to bring exposure KC
WOW!!! talk about clarity on that point. To desire to expose and to accuse is of the devil and to cover and forgive the godly response.
I wonder why Noah cursed Ham’s youngest son Canaan? It doesn’t seem fair because he had nothing to do with it, but I guess it follows that the sins of the Fathers will be on the sons and generations after. It seems that this is the first time that this happens, is that right? Thank God for Jesus Christ whose blood can break those bloodline curses.
Wendy
I have wrestled with this too.
Hebrews 7:7-10 King James Version (KJV)
7 And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.
8 And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.
9 And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.
10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.
What I see in this, is that Levi (generations away mind you) to God’s perception already existed and was actually present in Abraham when Abraham gave to Melchizedek. So perhaps this is guilt by association or by presence???
Or more like being made unclean while an unclean thing is done? I am somewhat convinced that generational sins pop up in our dna as genetic disorders. Is it possible that the curses literally impact our dna when we sin and do not repent? And then this modified genetic material accumulates the sins in a very physical form?
9 I am going to make a solemn promise to you and to everyone who will live after you. 10 This includes the birds and the animals that came out of the boat. 11 I promise every living creature that the earth and those living on it will never again be destroyed by a flood.
Interesting that he is speaking to all creation.
Reminds me of Romans 8:20-22 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration and futility, not willingly [because of some intentional fault on its part], but by the will of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will also be freed from its bondage to decay [and gain entrance] into the glorious freedom of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been moaning together as in the pains of childbirth until now. Amp
Rob
Wow.. it is always amazing to see how perfectly the OT and NT fit together and reflect one another. This really suggests that all of creation is waiting for the restoration of man as an essential and needful step for it to be redeemed and released as well. King James Bible “For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.”
Amen to that. Much more than we know.
Rob
How many people realize that by walking in , understanding who we are in Christ and the glorious freedom won for us that WE now have authority to see ‘futility’ lifted off of the planet? This is the answer to seeing solutions to pollution etc and So much more… there are miraculous answers to every problem when God has a people who understand and walk in their destiny.
KC
I am confounded by Noah’s words. He puts a curse on one son, and then asks God to bless Shem but then asks that Japheth would overtake Shem’s things.. ????
Yes that was bothering me too. I don’t understand that at all??????
Wendy
That’s a puzzler! KC
The OT patriarch’s seemed to really understand the power of their words and how irrevocable and powerful they are. This really strikes me and gives me pause about the words I let pass my lips. God has truly entrusted man with immense power if our words are endued with this kind of power. Interesting though. I have found in my own life that the belief behind my words plays as great a role as my words. I have been through many seasons where I felt like I was trying to do the right thing and say the right thing but my heart beliefs would often slip out and reveal the hypocrisy between my heart and my words. There is something immensely powerful, and I suspect if flows out of revelation of the power of being in convenant with God, when our words and beliefs are perfectly in sync or even largely in sync with God’s Word. When that response flows up and out of my belly before I have time to think in line with His Word, greater things seem to happen then if I try to think about it first and firgure out the right thing to say or do. Tranformation of my core nature and beliefs seem to be the truly central elements in my life of walking with God!
We were taught,
“Its not the words you speak but the spirit behind the words.”
Rob
Amen!!! Wendy
Helps a little reading Amplified.25 So he said,
“Cursed be Canaan [the son of Ham];
[a]A servant of servants
He shall be to his brothers.”
26 He also said,
“Blessed be the Lord,
The God of [b]Shem;
And let Canaan be his servant.
27
“May God enlarge [the land of] Japheth,
And [c]let [d]him dwell in the tents of Shem;
And let Canaan be his servant.”
Rob
Oh that comes across a lot clearer!KC
Much… perhaps that too is a call to live tight knit in communities.
So maybe they are sharing???
Wendy
In doing a little more digging around the cultural realities of the time ,this incidence of Noahs nakedness could imply a lot of things.( which I won’t go into),However regarding the curse of Ham and the blessing of Shem and Japheth one comment was….
Japhet lives in the tents of Shem. Japhet is not cursed. There is room in the land for Japhet, but Shem is the superior son because Shem is the ancestor of Abraham who is the ancestor of the Israelites (and actually a lot of others, too, along the line of Hagar, Keturah, Esau, etc).
KC
Blessings all on this day of the Lord. May He find us blameless and Holy and with our faced upturned to Him when He returns
Bless you all today KC❤️🙌🏻
In the voice translation it says in Vs27 “May God make plenty of room for Japheth’s family and give them homes among Shem’s tents.” Wendy
Something else that I wonder about is how did Noah know when he woke up what Ham had done. It doesn’t say his other sons were around or anyone told him, he just knew.
Wendy
