1st verse Job 42 World English Bible (WEB)
42 Then Job answered Yahweh,
2 “I know that you can do all things,
and that no purpose of yours can be restrained.
3 You asked, ‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’
therefore I have uttered that which I didn’t understand,
things too wonderful for me, which I didn’t know.
4 You said, ‘Listen, now, and I will speak;
I will question you, and you will answer me.’
5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye sees you.
6 Therefore I abhor myself,
and repent in dust and ashes.”
7 It was so, that after Yahweh had spoken these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends; for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has. 8 Now therefore, take to yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will accept him, that I not deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.”
Vs 8 illustrates the ministry of reconciliation. We see in this case Job had to intercede on their behaves that they were not positioned to approach God. But Job is fully restored to act as a servant priest on behalf of others. And God upholds Job in front of his friends. I also find the lack of commentary from God on Elihu, interesting. From what I see, Elihu spoke the truth. And yet there was no mention of it from the Lord, no commendation or sense of approval and yet of course no rebuke at all when the other 3 friends are clearly mentioned.
Perhaps Job’s conclusion (a true position of repentance and reverence) is one that ought to inspire all of us to spend time in seeking and a sincere posture of submission to God so that it will not take a “Job” scenario to get us there.. Thoughts?
I love in verse 5 where Job says “i have heard of you by the hearing ear; but now my eye see you; Therefore I retract, and I repent in dust and ashes.” Amp version. That is what I want more of to not just hear of Him but to see Him. For sure sure repentance seems like it will get you there.
God’s response to Job’s repentance is just stunning. He moves on without correcting Job for the parts he misunderstood (ie that God had done this to him instead of Satan being the real author of this calamnity). The book of Job to me epitimizes God’s nature of being perfectly just and perfectly gracious.
Yes and not only that but God acknowledge that he would now listen to Jobs intercessory prayers on behalf of his friends.. “ that He not deal with them According to their folly” This is wonderful to know that if our spirits are positioned before him as Job was in humility , our prayers can really see the mercy of God triumph over judgement! KC
I love that He gave Job the ability to pray and sacrifice for his friends so that they would be forgiven of how they sinned. That confirms and gives me hope that we as Kings and priests before Him can do the same for our family, friends and even the world. What a gracious and loving Father. He gives us every opportunity. I love that about Him.

next vs 10 WEB 0″Yahweh turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends. Yahweh gave Job twice as much as he had before. 11 Then all his brothers, all his sisters, and all those who had been of his acquaintance before, came to him and ate bread with him in his house. They comforted him, and consoled him concerning all the evil that Yahweh had brought on him. Everyone also gave him a piece of money, and everyone a ring of gold.”
I find these verses that reveal Kingdom Economy very interesting. When the Israelites left Egypt, God told them to ask for silver and gold and the Egyptians complied. Kind of like God was enforcing payment for their hard years of labour.. And here we see restitution… The JUSTICE of God is absolutely central to His nature and something I think can be overlooked.
LOL… Eating bread with someone I think is a real mark of accepting them… interesting that this verse highlights his restoration within the community at large. And yet they all creditted God for the evil.. I believe it still happens often today. Evil happens and God is blamed/accused and yet no where does God set them straight or defent Himself. Clearly the written record reveals the truth of the matter. But it seems like the people who lived through this came to the wrong conclusion on this point.
Yes I was thinking about that, how people immediately attribute all the bad things in the world to God, or say how could a loving God allow all these bad things to happen. Also thinking of Him as an angry, vengeful God, but what He had Job do for his friends really contradicts that. It is interesting.
Very interesting that God immediately provided for his financial needs. If we were this quick to jump in and give when a family is going through trials, what an impact that would have. These verses challenge me to think increasingly on what a godly community ought to look like.
“I had heard of You [only] by the hearing of the ear,
But now my [spiritual] eye sees You.
reminds me of
1 Corinthians 13:12 Amplified Bible (AMP)
12 For now [in this time of imperfection] we see in a mirror dimly [a blurred reflection, a riddle, an enigma], but then [when the time of perfection comes we will see reality] face to face. Now I know in part [just in fragments], but then I will know fully, just as I have been fully known [by God].
Yes… I can think of no greater comfort then a full revelation of the goodness of God and His abounding greater than anything else mightiness. In these days, it is hard not to go into striving and stress and yet head knowledge wise, I know that to fear is to be in sin. Constant prayer in these days to truly see God. His perfect love casts out all fear.1 John 4:18
Yes! ‘Seeing’ God as He really is … every time He reveals Himself in a greater way we see how we know in part and not as we ought to know and the response is “therefore I retract and repent! KC
I wonder how Job responded to his friends as they sat with the view that God was the bad guy . It is amazing that God doesn’t defend Himself. I often feel defensive for Him…
12 So Yahweh blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand female donkeys. 13 He had also seven sons and three daughters. 14 He called the name of the first, Jemimah; and the name of the second, Keziah; and the name of the third, Keren Happuch. 15 In all the land were no women found so beautiful as the daughters of Job. Their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers. 16 After this Job lived one hundred forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, to four generations. 17 So Job died, being old and full of days.
made me smile to see a Karen in there… 140 years of blessing. This keeps jumping out to me…. years of blessing before and 140 years of blessings after this very short window of devastationg.
The very last line of Job is the most beautiful epitaph. “17 So Job died, being old and full of days.” Very interesting that He lived that long.. We see that by the time of Noah that the world was so full of wickedness that God said He would only tolerate man to live 120 years.
Amen! God has a much better picture of our lives. Where we ought to live, how we ought to live, the time to be separated from our tent that will serve the Kingdom best etc,..
Remembering that this was just a window of time in the whole span of Jobs life give important perspective on the very tough times we experience in our own lives and Job didn’t have Jesus in the ‘window ‘ yet! kC
Both this passage and Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness motivate me to learn how to walk through adversity in faith. The relative brevity that is possible and the blessings that follow are worth meditating on in depth.
next verse Psalm 91 World English Bible (WEB)
91 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of Yahweh, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
my God, in whom I trust.”
Been more deeply into this psalm of late and had more of an ‘Ah ha ‘ moment understanding that the Hebrew meaning of ‘to dwell’ implies SiTTING as in fully RESTING. I understand this for myself as being in a place of stillness and no anxiety free from busy thoughts of trying to wrap my mind around things… KC
The last half of verse 1 in the amplified version is wonderful. “Will remain secure and rest in the shadow of the Almighty(whose power no enemy can withstand). I love that the power of His shadow no enemy can withstand.
That is worth pasting on my forehead. Haha

vs 3 and 4 (WEB) “For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler,
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers.
Under his wings you will take refuge.
His faithfulness is your shield and rampart.”
The KJV says noisome pestilence… I find the language possibililties here very interesting “הַוָּה havvâh, hav-vaw’; from H1933 (in the sense of eagerly coveting and rushing upon; by implication, of falling); desire; also ruin:—calamity, iniquity, mischief, mischievous (thing), naughtiness, naughty, noisome, perverse thing, substance, very wickedness.” From blueletter Bible. That saying of the bark is worse than the bite comes to mind. The enemy recognizes the power of stirring up and capturing our emotions with fear and stress. These cloud our thinking and take our focus off God and basically give him permission to cause greater physical and otherwise harm and damage. So so much of what comes via the enemy starts as a head game.
Somehow, really getting a revelation of His faithfulness is the ultimate shield over our minds. If we get how big He is, How good He is. How faithful He is.. then we are relieved of the need to be these things for ourselves. We can simply rest in Him. the other day, our youngest was curled up in the crook of my husband’s arm.. I could hear God saying.. that how safe and secure and content I want you to feel all the time.
vs 5+ 6 WEB “You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday.”
Vs 11-13 Amp
For He will give His angels charge concerning you,
To guard you in all your ways.
12
They will bear you up in their hands,
That you do not strike your foot against a stone.
13
You will tread upon the lion and cobra,
The young lion and the [d]serpent you will trample down.
Going back to our earlier chat… we will tread on the serpent… and yes.. we cannot even stub our toe if we are walking with God.. that is really something.
Such a picture of our immunity in Christ! I think the DECLARING , the determination WILL and actions of speaking out loud ‘He is my refuge and strength ‘ are powerful and transforming in so many ways.
KC
vs 7 and 8 “A thousand may fall at your side,
and ten thousand at your right hand;
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look with your eyes,
and see the recompense of the wicked.
These verses challenge me. God has not stopped being good because we see bad things happening all around us. These passages promise that we will see with out eyes the penalty fall on the wicked. I think we have to have this really straight in our hearts so that we guard ourselves against judgement and fear and stress and accusation etc. At our right hand implies really close. This paints a picture that somehow I must be prepared to stay and peace and calm even if horrors are happening where I can see and perceive them. There is a time that we simply can do nothing to “spare” another and that some will face the whirlwind in a way that we will be witnesses.
There are those who speak that these current things happening are Gods judgement on the wicked but I don’t want anything in me to be gleeful about that…I pray only that the judgements of God be corrective leading to repentance. KC
Today I want to meditate on this Psalm and let it go deep into my spirit. It has always impressed me and been a favourite, we even had a song that we sang in our church for years that I loved. But today I want to have it to have more life to my spirit. Thank you Father God for your love and faithfulness to us all. Let us rest in the Shelter of your wing, every minute of this day, today. Love and blessings Wendy
