1 Peter 2:13-14 New Living Translation (NLT)
“13 For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority—whether the king as head of state, 14 or the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honor those who do right.”
James 4:6-8 King James Version (KJV)
“6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”
Romans 10:17 King James Version (KJV) “17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
I know there is a temptation before all of us right now in may different forms and variations. One of the more subtle ones is rebellion, to apply our own reasoning and rational and then justify doing what we feel is right over the course recommended by the authority in this province.
Yes, it means submitting to something you may not whole heartedly agree with, but we are commanded to submit unless it goes against the Word or our consciences. It is good practice as we are called to work in unity and submission to the Lord’s governance. It takes humility, trust in the Lord and His Word, patience, self-control etc… all of which are good and excellent things to develop in our own character.
Others will be impacted by our choices. Our children are watching to see how we respond. The government is requiring quarantine (14 days) for those exposed. This is a long time to be home from work etc. And there are many who are living in fear these days… if we are quarantined, we cannnot be available to help serve them.
The scripture above warns us that faith comes from hearing. Whatever you listen to and feed your mind and heart on more will be stronger… Our rational minds can track that. But scripture takes it a step further and directly commands to abstain from the knowledge of good and evil. We are actually called to be innocent as babes regarding evil. Know enough to honour the mandates of the leadership yes… but spend the overwhelming buck of your time and effort on being built up in faith, with your focus on Jesus.
Do guard your gates. The above verse says to purify our hearts if we are double minded. Confusion and doublemindedness are the fruit of trying to follow to kingdoms…. Fear is not of God. Absolutely check for government updates once or twice a day so that you can respect and follow them, and perhaps something that puts things in perspective (for most people, this virus is a very low risk to do any real harm, and as God’s people we have great promises that guarantee us total protection)…Don’t get sucked in… I do encourage you to stay away from the rest of the media and posts etc which are fear mongering and causing a state of panic and stress. Sure, the whole thing is fascinating, unbelievable, etc…. so our curiosity is peaked.. resist that temptation. These things are on assignment to build up fear, dread, to open people up to getting sick and control our thinking and actions. Turn off the tap. Slam your gates closed and lock them tight. Guard your heart and focus on the Word, on the faithfulness of God and on the truth. This is a temporary shaking and for believers, I believe meant to drive us deeper into our relationships with God.
I so confirm this wisdom and guidance as to what our mindsets need to be during this time ! Saw this quote today that I was not aware of before by Martin Luther during the Bubonic plague.
“The 16th-century theologian Martin Luther had this to say during the bubonic plague, offering his thoughts in a letter titled “Whether One May Flee From a Deadly Plague” on how best to practically and spiritually overcome: You ought to think this way: “Very well, by God’s decree, the enemy has sent us poison and deadly offal. Therefore, I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine, and take it. I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not to become contaminated and thus perchance infect and pollute others, and so cause their death as a result of my negligence. If God should wish to take me, he will surely find me and I have done what he has expected of me and so I am not responsible for either my own death or the death of others. If my neighbor needs me, however, I shall not avoid place or person, but will go freely.” Sent from my iPhone
