An exercise in doing a word study in scripture.   I used 3 primary tools to compile this list:

Here’s what came up.   I have bolded a few passages and made a small handful of comments.  But mostly I invite you to pray that simple prayer.  “Dear Heavenly Father, I ask for eyes to see what you want me to see, and ears to hear what you long for me to hear and the ability to understand Your Precious Words, so that I may live by them and glorify you to the uttermost, In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.”  Circle, underline and write down what stands out to you.

I truly believe this is something every believer should work through and understand.  Scripture tells us that no one can enter the kingdom unless they are born of the water and the Spirit.    So it is surely worth the time and effort to consider all of God’s counsel on this matter attentively.   Blessings my dear Brothers and Sisters.

Baptism is a theological hot topic.    It lends itself to a lot of debate and has resulted in many schisms and denominations being created   I tend to try to stay out of debates of this nature.  I would simply encourage you seek the Word, spend some time learning about how your church handles baptism and the scriptures behind why they do what they do, and if you haven’t yet been baptized…. JUMP IN.     I will post a bunch of different verses on baptism from scripture.  Do study them and pray and ask God if there is anything He is asking you to do that you have not yet done.

John 3:5-7 English Standard Version (ESV)  “5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.[a] 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You[b] must be born again.’”

This one is precious to me.  If there is an option to see how Jesus did something while He was in the flesh, I pay close attention.    So when I came to faith, I very much wanted to be baptized the same way that Jesus was.  It was November when I got baptized so it didn’t look exactly like this (jumping in a lake in late fall not a great option in London Ontario).  I had 46 people come to my baptism and a party afterwards as I could hardly wait.        Someone asked a question about baptism this week, and my short answer was “it depends on who you ask”.   Of course I have personal convictions on this matter as each one of us should do.    Pastor Greg would be an excellent resource if you have questions about what happens at Byron United. 

There are many different theologies around baptism.   Regardless of where we end up on these topics, we must guard the unity of the body of Christ and honour one anothers beliefs and convictions  and take special care to be a blessing and encouragement to those who pour out their lives to lead and encourage us in the faith.   Even in our little group, I know there are several different beliefs on this topic.    Guard your hearts against divisions and contentions.    Wherever you land, do oh do proceed based on knowledge and understanding.

Acts 2:37-39 King James Version (KJV)  “37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.  39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Being baptized is a command in the New Testament.  Depending on who is reading, some would argue one needs to be baptized to be saved).   I can see clearly in scripture that the verses say that we have to be born of the water and the spirit to enter the Kingdom.   But I do not equate entering the Kingdom with salvation.   I think my own understanding on this point has not come to clarity yet.

15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:  16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)  17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

Acts 10:44-48 King James Version (KJV)
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.  46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,  47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?  48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.”

Even though they had received the baptism of the Holy Ghost, they still proceeded with water baptism.  So while many receive both at the same time, some receive water baptism and Holy Spirit baptism at separate times.  There is also reference to the baptism of fire, this is often a separate event too, I do not know much about this one though.  I is often linked with greater power and miracles following it.

We die to ourselves and are raised up as new creations when we are baptized.   This is an excellent reason to be baptized.

6 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this will we do, if God permit.  4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.”

Something to wrestle out.   Here it says the doctrine of baptisms.. Below in Ephesians 4,  it says there is one baptism.  This is a point of theological debate.   Let each one consider the full counsel of God regarding baptism(s) and see for themselves what scripture means and how these two statements are absolutely true and work together:)

I recognize that some might feel I was hedging on this topic.   And in some ways, yes.   My knowledge is limited as I have not truly explored this from all angles.   I have stuck mostly to the scriptures shared here in forming my own personal view and while I have heard a lot of theology on baptismal positions of different churches, I have not read books nor have a heard those well versed in other positions explain via scriptures.  So my own lens on this topic is based on scripture but potentially biased.   I will always carefully consider other views that are presented and supported with scripture though and have been known upon seeing new verses to adapt my theology accordingly.
