In response to the baptism questions that came up this week

An exercise in doing a word study in scripture.   I used 3 primary tools to compile this list:

Biblehub (cross reference verses)

Blue Letter Bible (I looked up the word in a verse and then got all the verses that used the same Greek word in the original manuscripts, this is also where i found the word defintion from the STrongs Concordance)

βαπτίζω baptízō, bap-tid’-zo; from a derivative of G911; to immerse, submerge; to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the New Testament) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism:—Baptist, baptize, wash.

Here’s what came up.   I have bolded a few passages and made a small handful of comments.  But mostly I invite you to pray that simple prayer.  “Dear Heavenly Father, I ask for eyes to see what you want me to see, and ears to hear what you long for me to hear and the ability to understand Your Precious Words, so that I may live by them and glorify you to the uttermost, In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.”  Circle, underline and write down what stands out to you.

I truly believe this is something every believer should work through and understand.  Scripture tells us that no one can enter the kingdom unless they are born of the water and the Spirit.    So it is surely worth the time and effort to consider all of God’s counsel on this matter attentively.   Blessings my dear Brothers and Sisters.

Baptism is a theological hot topic.    It lends itself to a lot of debate and has resulted in many schisms and denominations being created   I tend to try to stay out of debates of this nature.  I would simply encourage you seek the Word, spend some time learning about how your church handles baptism and the scriptures behind why they do what they do, and if you haven’t yet been baptized…. JUMP IN.     I will post a bunch of different verses on baptism from scripture.  Do study them and pray and ask God if there is anything He is asking you to do that you have not yet done.

John 3:5-7 English Standard Version (ESV)  “5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.[a] 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You[b] must be born again.’”

Matthew 3 King James Version (KJV) (another account in Mark 1 and Luke 3 and John 1) ” In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,  2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.  4 And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.  5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,  6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.  7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?  8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:  9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.  10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.  11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.  14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.  16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:  17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

This one is precious to me.  If there is an option to see how Jesus did something while He was in the flesh, I pay close attention.    So when I came to faith, I very much wanted to be baptized the same way that Jesus was.  It was November when I got baptized so it didn’t look exactly like this (jumping in a lake in late fall not a great option in London Ontario).  I had 46 people come to my baptism and a party afterwards as I could hardly wait.        Someone asked a question about baptism this week, and my short answer was “it depends on who you ask”.   Of course I have personal convictions on this matter as each one of us should do.    Pastor Greg would be an excellent resource if you have questions about what happens at Byron United.

There are many different theologies around baptism.   Regardless of where we end up on these topics, we must guard the unity of the body of Christ and honour one anothers beliefs and convictions  and take special care to be a blessing and encouragement to those who pour out their lives to lead and encourage us in the faith.   Even in our little group, I know there are several different beliefs on this topic.    Guard your hearts against divisions and contentions.    Wherever you land, do oh do proceed based on knowledge and understanding.

Invest in becoming familiar with the scriptural foundations and practices of your local church. .   Take the time to learn and know why you do what you do.    I am sure Pastor Greg or your Pastor if you attend another congregation would be delighted to chat with anyone interested in having a discussion about baptism or being baptized.   If you attend Byron United, baptism is offered as one of the sacraments available to members and soon to be members.    If you want to know more, book a time with Greg and chat about your options.  For those who are not members,  please let me know and we can make arrangements for you individually as there are several options available.       This is a highlight for many Pastors and a great joy to share with one’s flock.
I have attached  A LOT of verses so that those who want to consider the full counsel of God can.   I have highlighted a few verses so those who want a little less to consider have something to focus on.

Matthew 28:18-20 King James Version (KJV)  18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.  19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:  20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Matthew 20:21-23 King James Version (KJV)
21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.  23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

Mark 16:15-20 King James Version (KJV)
“15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.  16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.  17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;   18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.  20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.”

Luke 7:29-35 New International Version (NIV)
29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John. 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:  “‘We played the pipe for you,  and you did not dance;  we sang a dirge,  and you did not cry.’  33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”

Luke 12:49-52 King James Version (KJV)
49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?  50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!  51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: 52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.

John 3:22-30 New International Version (NIV)
22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized. 23 Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24 (This was before John was put in prison.) 25 An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing. 26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”  27 To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’ 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”[a]

John 4:1-3 King James Version (KJV)
4 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,  2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)  3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

Acts 1:4-6 King James Version (KJV)
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

Acts 2:37-39 King James Version (KJV)  “37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.  39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Being baptized is a command in the New Testament.  Depending on who is reading, some would argue one needs to be baptized to be saved).   I can see clearly in scripture that the verses say that we have to be born of the water and the spirit to enter the Kingdom.   But I do not equate entering the Kingdom with salvation.   I think my own understanding on this point has not come to clarity yet.

Acts 8:12-13 King James Version (KJV)
12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

Acts 8:15-17 King James Version (KJV)
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:  16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)  17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

Acts 10:44-48 King James Version (KJV)
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.  46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,  47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?  48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.”

Even though they had received the baptism of the Holy Ghost, they still proceeded with water baptism.  So while many receive both at the same time, some receive water baptism and Holy Spirit baptism at separate times.  There is also reference to the baptism of fire, this is often a separate event too, I do not know much about this one though.  I is often linked with greater power and miracles following it.

Acts 16:14-15 King James Version (KJV)
14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.  15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

Acts 16:32-34 King James Version (KJV)  32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.  34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

Acts 18:7-8 King James Version (KJV)
7 And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man’s house, named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue.8 And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.

Acts 19 King James Version (KJV)19 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,  He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.  Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.7 And all the men were about twelve.

Acts 22:10-20 New International Reader’s Version (NIRV) 10 “ ‘What should I do, Lord?’ I asked. “ ‘Get up,’ the Lord said. ‘Go into Damascus. There you will be told everything you have been given to do.’ 11 The brightness of the light had blinded me. So my companions led me by the hand into Damascus.12 “A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a godly Jew who obeyed the law. All the Jews living there respected him very much. 13 He stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ At that very moment I was able to see him.14 “Then he said, ‘The God of our people has chosen you. He wanted to tell you his plans for you. You have seen the Blameless One. You have heard words from his mouth. 15 Now you will tell everyone about what you have seen and heard. 16 So what are you waiting for? Get up and call on his name. Be baptized. Have your sins washed away.’17 “I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple. Then it seemed to me that I was dreaming. 18 I saw the Lord speaking to me. ‘Quick!’ he said. ‘Leave Jerusalem at once. The people here will not accept what you tell them about me.’  19 “ ‘Lord,’ I replied, ‘these people know what I used to do. I went from one synagogue to another and put believers in prison. I also beat them. 20 Stephen was a man who told other people about you. I stood there when he was killed. I had agreed that he should die. I even guarded the coats of those who were killing him.’

Romans 6:1-4 King James Version (KJV)
6 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?  3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?  4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

1 Corinthians 1:13-20 King James Version (KJV)“13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;  15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.  16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.  17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. 18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.  19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.  20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?”

1 Corinthians 10:1-4 New International Version (NIV) “10 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ”

1 Corinthians 12:12-14 King James Version (KJV)
12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.  13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For the body is not one member, but many.

Galatians 3:26-28 King James Version (KJV)
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.  27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.  28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 2:10-15 King James Version (KJV)
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

We die to ourselves and are raised up as new creations when we are baptized.   This is an excellent reason to be baptized.

Hebrews 6:1-6 King James Version (KJV)
6 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this will we do, if God permit.  4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.”

Something to wrestle out.   Here it says the doctrine of baptisms.. Below in Ephesians 4,  it says there is one baptism.  This is a point of theological debate.   Let each one consider the full counsel of God regarding baptism(s) and see for themselves what scripture means and how these two statements are absolutely true and work together:)

1 Peter 3:18-22 English Standard Version (ESV)
18 For Christ also suffered[a] once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which[b] he went and proclaimed[c] to the spirits in prison, 20 because[d] they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

Interesting that Noah’s Ark is also a type and shadow of baptism

Ephesians 4 Amplified Bible (AMP)
4 So I, the prisoner for the Lord, appeal to you to live a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called [that is, to live a life that exhibits godly character, moral courage, personal integrity, and mature behavior—a life that expresses gratitude to God for your salvation], 2 with all humility [forsaking self-righteousness], and gentleness [maintaining self-control], with patience, bearing with one another [a]in [unselfish] love. 3 Make every effort to keep the oneness of the Spirit in the bond of peace [each individual working together to make the whole successful]. 4 There is one body [of believers] and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when called [to salvation]— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of us all who is [sovereign] over all and [working] through all and [living] in all.  7 Yet grace [God’s undeserved favor] was given to each one of us [not indiscriminately, but in different ways] in proportion to the measure of Christ’s [rich and abundant] gift. 8 Therefore it says, “When He ascended on high,He led captivity captive,  And He bestowed gifts on men.” 9 (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had previously descended [from the heights of heaven] into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is the very same as He who also has ascended high above all the heavens, that He [His presence] might fill all things [that is, the whole universe]).

1 Corinthians 2 (TPT)
6 However, there is a wisdom that we continually speak of when we are among the spiritually mature.[f] It’s wisdom that didn’t originate in this present age, nor did it come from the rulers of this age who are in the process of being dethroned.[g] 7 Instead, we[h] continually speak of this wonderful wisdom that comes from God, hidden before now in a mystery.[i] It is his secret plan, destined[j]before the ages, to bring us into glory.[k]8 None of the rulers of this present world order understood it,[l] for if they had, they never would have crucified the Lord of shining glory.[m] 9 This is why the Scriptures say:
Things never discovered or heard of before,  things beyond our ability to imagine[n]—
these are the many things God has in store  for all his lovers.[o]  10 But God now unveils these profound realities to us by the Spirit.[p] Yes, he has revealed to us his inmost heart and deepest mysteries through the Holy Spirit, who constantly explores all things. 11 After all, who can really see into a person’s heart and know his hidden impulses except for that person’s spirit? So it is with God. His thoughts and secrets are only fully understood by his Spirit, the Spirit of God.12 For we did not receive the spirit of this world system but the Spirit of God, so that we might come to understand and experience all that grace has lavished upon us. 13 And we[q] articulate these realities with the words imparted to us by the Spirit and not with the words taught by human wisdom. We join together Spirit-revealed truths with Spirit-revealed words.[r] 14 Someone living on an entirely human level[s]rejects[t] the revelations of God’s Spirit, for they make no sense to him. He can’t understand the revelations of the Spirit because they are only discovered by the illumination of the Spirit. 15 Those who live in the Spirit are able to carefully evaluate all things, and they are subject to the scrutiny of no one but God. 16 For who has ever intimately known the mind of the Lord Yahweh[u] well enough to become his counselor?[v]  Christ has, and we possess Christ’s perceptions.[w]

Ezekiel 36:25
I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols.

In creating this post, I realized I needed to create another post which you can see here:  https://healinganddiscipleship.com/the-lens-i-choose-to-read-scripture-through/     We all see the Word through a specific lens, I have shared what mine is.  Clearly our lenses colour all that we see.

I recognize that some might feel I was hedging on this topic.   And in some ways, yes.   My knowledge is limited as I have not truly explored this from all angles.   I have stuck mostly to the scriptures shared here in forming my own personal view and while I have heard a lot of theology on baptismal positions of different churches, I have not read books nor have a heard those well versed in other positions explain via scriptures.  So my own lens on this topic is based on scripture but potentially biased.   I will always carefully consider other views that are presented and supported with scripture though and have been known upon seeing new verses to adapt my theology accordingly.

Therefore I ask you to any other verses pertaining to baptism in the comments for all to consider.  Blessings.

Was it God’s will when my loved one died or for those who are still sick to be sick? If I had prayed better would they have lived?

This heart cry question popped up this week, several times and in several ways.   I will try to share the scriptures and verses I quoted.

For those of us who pray for the sick, we often have heart wounds.  The losses can feel almost so devastating that we are tempted to quit or can feel racked with guilt and sorrow.

This is what I understand at the moment.  Please be Berean and see what you can see for your self.  For those who heard me share this this week, please let me know if this comes across clearly in writing.

First question:  If your loved one had been taken to Jesus during His earthly ministry, would they have been healed?

YES!!!  Scripture tells us that we wil o the same works He did, what we are filled with the Holy Spirit who is greater than He who is in the World, that all believers can lay hands on the sick and they will recover.

James 1:17 New American Standard Bible (NASB)” 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or [a]shifting shadow.”

Hebrews 13:8 King James Version (KJV) “8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”

John 16:7-8 New American Bible (Revised Edition) (NABRE) “. 7 But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 [a]And when he comes he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation:”

John 14:12 King James Version (KJV) “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”

1 John 4:3-6 King James Version (KJV) “3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.  4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.  5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.  6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.”

There is no scripture to quote that gives even one example in scripture of Jesus refusing to heal anyone who was brought or who came to Him. (see the 2 posts about Paul’s thorn if you believe this was the one exception).    The only criteria is that somehow or other they showed up, either seeking healing for themselves, or for someone else or even just because they wanted to hear Him speak.   We are not told the individual motives, sin issues, medical issues, faith levels etc of the crowd/mulititude/many that He healed.      We are told only once that He could do no mighty works due to their unbelief.. but even then He healed a few sick ones by the laying on of hands.  See if you can spot the trend in the next few verses from the KJV.

Acts 3:6 “Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.”

1 John 4:18-19 18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 19We love him, because he first loved us.

Acts 1:4-8 4And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. 6When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, LORD, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

In each verse, they had to first receive and then give what they received.

2 Corinthians 8(NLT) ” ‘10 Here is my advice: It would be good for you to finish what you started a year ago. Last year you were the first who wanted to give, and you were the first to begin doing it.11 Now you should finish what you started. Let the eagerness you showed in the beginning be matched now by your giving. Give in proportion to what you have.12 Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give according to what you have, not what you don’t have.”

Luke 12 Berean Study Bible “7That servant who knows his master’s will but does not get ready or follow his instructions will be beaten with many blows. 48But the one who unknowingly does things worthy of punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from him who has been entrusted with much, even more will be demanded. 49I have come to ignite a fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!”

Generally, we can only give in proportion to what we have received.  Peter says plainly, “such as I have give I thee”.  He knew he had it and therefore was totally confident about giving it to another.  I must stress that it is not Jesus who has failed to give, but us who are still in the process of fully receiving what He has done for us.

John 6:29 New Living Translation (NLT)  “29 Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”

This same Peter was among those who fled when Jesus was arrested and who denied Christ.  He was likely there when they failed to heal the boy with seizures.    Something changed, something shifted,

2nd question:  If we prayed better, would they have been healed?  No.

I love my daughter.   She is a wonderful toddler.   She does things in perfect toddler fashion.  She acts her age.   She is precious and lovely and exactly doing what she is suppose to be doing, often with gusto.     I do not expect her to behave like my 10 year old.   I do not expect her to write words or to climb trees etc.  Because is 2 and not 10.   I do require this of my ten year old and will not let him act like my 2 year old when it comes to his responsibilities.  I expect to act and do according to his ability.

Those who are praying for the sick are often highly dedicated in their prayers, in their seeking of God, in their reading of the Word, in their serving of the community.    I have prayed for many, some have been healed, some have not and a few have passed away in spite of our best efforts.  I believe that when we give are all and apply all that we know and are capable of, that we hear those blessed words of the Lord.   “My Good and faithful servant”.

The parable of the talents is one that comes to mind often when I think about my own experiences.   The owner came back and commended those who used the talents he gave them.  He gave the same commendation to both who had put what they gave him to use.   The only one he rebuked was the one that buried it in fear. (see Matthew 5:14-30)

A personal story to illustrate this.   We had been praying earnestly for a young child who was suffering from seizures and later diagnosed with a benign brain tumor.    We rejoice when all seizures stopped for a window of months..  and were profoundly challenged when they resumed and surgery and months of recovery and years of follow up with doctors followed.   Praise God, she is well today and thriving and a very blessed child.   At the time though, I felt like the worst kind of failure and like a total hypocrit.   I could see what I could see in scripture and hope for her healing, but I struggled inwardly with fear, doubt and unbelief.    The couple brought their precious child to a meeting where a more experienced and knowledgeable healing teacher was speaking.   I invited them to come and and silently prayed and begged God that this would be the night the child was healed.   I prayed earnestly that the speaker would bless this devoted mama with words of encouragement and power and that this family’s struggle would end that night in victory.    As I prayed, the speaker did speak to this dear sister…   And I wept quietly rejoicing to hear words I longed to speak and share with her that I had know window or ability to utter.    I was feeling utterly low and crushed personally but still rejoicing in the Goodness of our God.   I was utterly shocked and beyond blessed when the speaker than spoke to me…..  Words that blessed me beyond anything I can share here.    He told me that the Father wanted me to know that I was a good and faithful servant.  I was stunned, shocked, and humbled and blessed and healed and renewed and in awe of the Father’s goodness to me in that hour.      From that day on, it has slowly sunk in, that these words are for every child of God who faithfully day by day lives out to the best of their present knowledge and ability, regardless of the outcome that we are hoping for as we go about the Father’s business.

Satan likes to accuse us and tell us how terribly we have failed and bombard us with thoughts of “if only I…”    But the reaility is, if we have prayed with our whole heart, sought Him earnestly and done all that we know to do with passion….   Then we have not failed.  We have done all and given all that we have.    The Lord is well pleased with those who are faithful in this way.    Going back to the parable of the talents.    The Lord is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him and He will multiply and supernaturally advance those who faithfully use and invest in what He has given them.      We will continue to grow in our talents and abilities as we faithfully use and yes, we will grow in increase in our kingdom capacities.   This is a reason for great hope and rejoicing..

The reality is that sometimes, what we have presently been able to believe and receive of God’s truth, is not sufficient for the emergency or issue at hand in some cases.  But we have glorified God in giving all.   God is not angry with us for failing to be like Elijah.  He is not comparing us to anyone but ourselves and to Christ. He is calling us to grow up, to crucify our flesh and to spend time with Him and be in His Word    If we are growing and learning, doing what His Word says completely and seeking Him and maturing, we are doing all that He asks of us.

Scripture tells us, Paul and many others leaders of religious law had made it their life’s work to study the scriptures and even lead their communities accordingly.    But somehow even though their lives were dedicated, somehow they were missing some key elements in their knowledge.

I can truly accept the “My good and faithful servant” from the Lord AND rest in knowing that all the while He is equipping me for even greater works as I rest in Him.

But I do remain on guard against error and complacency…   Going back to that same parable, do you see either one of these in the servant the master rebuked?     With even the great men falling prey to these two things, I believe it is wise to be mindful of these things.

The Bible records that they were suffering due to a sort of spiritual blindness and deafness.  This is why we must be Berean in all that we hear.   All of us have gaps in our understanding and errors in our theology.   Some of these are keeping us from experiencing the fullness of what the Word of God has promised us.

Thankfully, we can ask Him for eyes to see and ears to hear and the ability to understand. We can ask Him to expose any error in our thinking etc and He is so faithful in answering these prayers.

Scripture also reveals that hearing from and being filled with the Holy Spirit are essential to truly understanding God’s Word.  1 Corinthians 2 especially in the The Passion Translation, speaks to this very powerfully.   So we can also ask God to fill us with the Holy Spirit and help us to hear His voice in ever increasing measure.

Mark 7:11-13 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 11 but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, [a]given to God),’ 12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; 13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”

Isaiah 6:9-10 English Standard Version (ESV)9 And he said, “Go, and say to this people:  “‘Keep on hearing,[a] but do not understand;  keep on seeing,[b] but do not perceive.’  10 Make the heart of this people dull,[c]  and their ears heavy,  and blind their eyes;  lest they see with their eyes,  and hear with their ears,  and understand with their hearts,  and turn and be healed.”

Matthew 15:12-14 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) 12 Then the disciples came up and told Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard this statement?”  13 He replied, “Every plant that My heavenly Father didn’t plant will be uprooted. 14 Leave them alone! They are blind guides.[a] And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

Today is the perfect day to start.  Just pray a simple prayer like, “Lord, please forgive me.  I have been passive, I have been complacent in my walk.  I have not been seeking you with zeal and have gotten comfortable feeding on spiritual milk.   I want to grow up starting now.  Help me to seek you passionately and do what I see in your word so that I can do greater and greater things for your Kingdom and glory.  In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ”

We can do nothing in our human effort.   But we can do all things in Christ who strengthens us.

John 6:63 New Living Translation (NLT)
63 The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Galatians 3:3 New Living Translation (NLT)
3 How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?

Isaiah 53 tells us Jesus bore our condemnation.    Proverbs 24:16 tells us the righteousman falls 7 times but gets back up.     Dear ones, let us continue to boldly get back up and let Him strengthen us and equip us for war.

Psalm 144:1 Berean Study Bible “Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. 2He is my loving devotion and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer. He is my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.…”

Ephesians 4:11-13 King James Version (KJV)
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Ephesians 4:14-16 King James Version (KJV)
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Dear Ones, we are where we are today in Christ.   We are limited by several biblical factors.   A healthy flesh that has not been crucified will keep us from fully entering and acting as a Kingdom Ambassador.   I only started to begin to really understand this in the last year.   Acting on this truth has radically changed my ability to hear and obey God with boldness.   Fear and doubt will shackle us.  These are things that the love of God and Word of God will drive out of us.   Truly we can only  act on what we know and what we presently have received and believed.

But we have an Advocate, a Counselor, a Comforter and Teacher who is committed to helping us grow up in Christ and learn to do the things He did in greater and greater measure.  We should no sooner condemn ourselves for being limited by our age and understanding, than we should rebuke a toddler for being limited to the abilities of a toddler.    We can in fact learn to rejoice and rest in knowing that we have done all that we know to do and commit the rest to our faithful and VERY GOOD Father. Truly as we behold His glory, His truth, we are being transformed into his image by the Holy Spirit.

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 New King James Version (NKJV)  “17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as [a]by the Spirit of the Lord.”

As we seek Him first,  read His Word, pray and fast,  as we meet together and are equipped by the various people in the body of Christ, as we learn to worship God in Spirit and in Truth, we will grow and bear abundant fruit for His Kingdom.

We have two paths before us.  The road of the passive and the complacent, to rely on others to feed us milk and carry us, OR we can choose  to deny ourselves, pick our cross and follow Jesus, letting Him grow us up into the fullness of His purpose and calling on our lives.

Let us rejoice knowing that He who has promised is faithful and will finish the work He began in our lives.

Isn’t our Heavenly Father Good?  All through scripture, we see that He used one or a few Spirit lead ones, submitted ones  and faithful ones to act as elders and intercessors for the whole Body of Christ.  We see this in Moses, in Joshua, of course in Jesus and the apostle.

If David hadn’t showed up on the scene with His faith in God firmly established, Goliath would have one the day by intimidation.   James 5 tells us that this was God’s intention for our churches today.    So let’s also keep praying that God would raise up the biblical elders to oversee, heal and stand guard over our flocks, all the while equipping them and preparing them for the work of the ministry.

What to prepare for this week

Hello!

What we will be covering this week (we typically get through 9 to 12 verses each week):

Tuesday Subtitle 6, verse Isaiah 55:10-11, likely through subtitle 8 possibly starting on 9

Thursdayt Page ???  subtitle #3 Verse from  Psalm 119:93

Discussion time:  Website post, Tuesday morning thinking about our thoughts.    Thursday:  What manner of man are we really:  exploring our identity in Christ.

Reminders:  You are all doing such a great job.  Let’s keep respecting one another and keeping our commentary to the verses.

Summer plans:   We plan to wrap up this session the week of June the 11th and 13th and take a two week break before starting the next 6 to 8ish week session.   I am available to facilitate this study through the summer if there is interest, so think about your summer plans and if Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:30 or Thursdays from 7 to 9 (we could start earlier from 6:30 to 8:30 if that is better too).    This is our second last week of this session.   As always, more are welcome to join us at any time.  I will do a one time intro session for 2 hours with new people joining us.

Possible summer session:  starting July 2nd and 4th to the middle of August, 2-3 week break at the end of August.   We would continue on with this Topic:  The Word of God God

Summary of practical suggestions

This is part of “our part” of working out our salvation with fear and trembling daily.(See Philippians 2:12)   Be so encouraged, as you are faithful in the small things, He will mutliply all things for you.  Blessings.

  1.  Commit to setting apart a daily time to “feed on” Gods Word and aim to meditate on one or two things that God has revealed to you.    Think of the reading part as the actual eating and the meditating part as the digesting part.    To get the full benefit we need to do both.  It is so encouraging to know that even if we don’t feel like we are getting it, the Word itself is working in us and is washing us and equipping us.
  2. Keep a praise and thanksgiving journal so that if you hit a low or challenging time you can look back and be reminded and encouraged by God’s faithfulness in the past.
  3. Think about what you are thinking about.   Start to mindfully guard your heart by setting and enforcing boundaries on what you think about.
  4. Crucifying the flesh:   Deny yourself, pick up your cross and walk as Jesus walked.   Truly to be His disciple, the flesh must lose it’s power over us.  I believe this is the major source of the “wet blankets” of fear, doubt and unbelief that cover and smothers our faith.

Thinking about our thoughts….

The scriptures I mentioned on Thursday night….
This is a conversation that I have been having with my children.    It is so important to recognize that the thoughts in our head, even though they sound like our thoughts, have more than one source.
God actually calls us to take every thought captive.  That means we have to really think about and exercise self-control over our thinking.    Thank goodness that God helps us even with this.  One of the fruits of the spirit is self-control.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
3 For though we live in the body,[a] we do not wage war in an unspiritual way,[b] 4 since the weapons of our warfare are not worldly,[c] but are powerful through God for the demolition of strongholds. We demolish arguments 5 and every high-minded thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive to obey Christ.

Matthew 16:23 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
23 But He turned and told Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns, but man’s.”

This verse is a great reminder that God is calling us to put the Kingdom of God first, and to seek out God’s perspective.   So encouraging to know that God will even give us the desire and ability to do what pleases Him.  Abiding in Him, as is so often the case, helps us develop a singular eye, one that is fixed on the Lord’s agenda.

Luke 22:3-4 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, who was numbered among the Twelve. 4 He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police how he could hand Him over to them.

Romans 8:6-8 Berean Study Bible “The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace, 7because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s Law, nor can it do so. 8Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God.…”
Ephesians 6 ESV”10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.”

1 Corinthians 2:16 English Standard Version (ESV)
16 “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

1 Corinthians 14:13-15 English Standard Version (ESV)
13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.

Very often, temptation comes in the form of a thought.   Here we see Cain facing such a temptation and God admonishing him to resist it.   We know how this story ends and as a result of not taking his thoughts captive, Cain committed the first murder.

Genesis 4:6-8 (BSB) ““Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen? 7If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; you are its object of desire, but you must master it.”

I know we can look at Cain and judge him harshly.   The truth is, that according to scripture we have all “murdered” one or more people with our tongue.  Romans 1:28-32 lists slandering and gossiping right up there with the worst sins possible.  1 John spells it out very plainly.   Hating someone (something conceived in our thought life) is the same as murder in God’s book.

1 John 3:15 “Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.”

James 1:13-18 describes the process.     When a thought comes, if we start to entertain it, and roll it around in our mind, we become accomplice to that thought.   God tells us we will be held accountable for every idle word we speak and that out of the heart the  heart the mouth speaks.  Our best defense is to shut down temptation at the first thought.

(the Amplified Bible) “Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God” [for temptation does not originate from God, but from our own flaws]; for God cannot be tempted by [what is] evil, and He Himself tempts no one. 14 But each one is tempted when he is dragged away, enticed and baited [to commit sin] by his own [worldly] desire (lust, passion). 15 Then when the illicit desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin has run its course, it gives birth to death. 16 Do not be misled, my beloved brothers and sisters. 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of lights [the Creator and Sustainer of the heavens], in whom there is no variation [no rising or setting] or shadow [d]cast by His turning [for He is perfect and never changes]. 18 It was of His own will that He gave us birth [as His children] by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits of His creatures [a prime example of what He created to be set apart to Himself—sanctified, made holy for His divine purposes].”

Matthew 12:36 King James Version (KJV)  “36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.”

Luke 6:45 NASB “”The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.”

Remember, Proverbs 4:23 says to guard our hearts, out of it flow the issues of life (my paraphrase).

Be wise, be vigilant.   Take every single thought captive.    If I have a thought that is not glorifying to God, and I catch it at the very first thought, I speak to that thought and the source of that thought and say something like.  “I do not agree with this thought, whatever brought this thought, be banished from me and my family and take all your thoughts with you.  In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.”   I tend to treat the first bad thought as a freebie.   I have no control over the first thought that pops into my head, but I do have control over the second if I am being mindful of my thinking.   If I entertain that thought and think about a second time or longer, I treat that as a sin and confess to God that I was thinking wrong thoughts in addition to the above prayer.   Trying not to think something usually backfires for me, so I intentionally then choose to praise God or thank Him for the next few minutes to occupy my mind with something pure, lovely and good.

Philippians 4:8 CEB “From now on, brothers and sisters, if anything is excellent and if anything is admirable, focus your thoughts on these things: all that is true, all that is holy, all that is just, all that is pure, all that is lovely, and all that is worthy of praise.”

This is be a central ” our part” throughout scripture and is essential to having a victorious walk with God..    We will never live the life God planned for us to live if we don’t master our thought life with His help.    Let us pray daily and seek His help daily to overcome.

Taking the Promised land from the Giants (for those tired of living in base camp who want to strive for the summit)

Heavenly Father, I pray for eyes to see and ears to hear and that your heart of Love would permeate all that is shared here and that grace and mercy and Your truth would abound in the hearts and thinking of anyone who reads this post, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
This is speaking at a whole other level than what I go into during our study time. Please take everything, absolutely all of it back to the Word to verify what is written here. This is kind of the answer to why do we need to spiritually grow up to see all the sick get healed.

The Word of God is the most binding power in all of Creation. God, even God, will not break or contradict His Word even in the tiniest detail. In a strange way, human beings are the only thing in all of creation that can actually break God’s Word and boundaries. We are truly unique in this. Why is this? I think it goes back to the garden.

God gave Adam and Eve dominion over His Creation. Without going into tremendous depth (which this topic truly warrants but I think puts us ahead of where we are at the moment) the short answer is that God gave us all free will. He has delegated certain parts of His plan to us and is bound by His Word and His absolute respect of our free will to not cross the boundaries He Himself has put up in his infinite wisdom.

Literally, God is waiting on us to fulfill our part – complete surrender and faith in Him – because then He is free to do His good and perfect will.     You could think of it like a tap in your house.  You can have a tap and water, but unless you turn on the fawcett, the water will not flow and you will benefit from having it in your home.   Our part gives us access to all that God has provided in His Word.

God, through Jesus, has already done His part, but our part opens the door wide for what He has already done to flood into our lives. Everything in God’s creation follows the order He has established. We are not simply asking for the sick to be healed, we are plundering what the enemy considers to be his goods. Very often, Satan has legal rights to those he is preying upon. This is why we need to know our Advocate, the Lord Jesus Christ, so very intimately when we go about the work of setting the captives free for His Kingdom and His glory.

Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you as My priests. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.” Berean Study Bible

Genesis 1:26 [Full Chapter] … And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth …

Genesis 1:27-29 King James Version (KJV) 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.  28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth. 29  And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

Exodus 23:29-31 (KJV) 29 I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee. 30 By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land. 31 And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.

Psalm 8:4-6 (NKJ) 4 What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? 5 For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet.

Matthew 12:28-30 The Passion Translation (TPT) 28 On the other hand, if I drive out demons by the power of the Spirit of God, then the end of Satan’s kingdom has come![a]29 Who would dare enter the house of a mighty man and steal his property? First he must be overpowered and tied up by one who is stronger than he. Then his entire house can be plundered and every possession stolen. 30 So join with me,[b]for if you’re not on my side you are against me. And if you refuse to help me gather the spoils, you are making things worse.[c]”

Isaiah 49:24-25 “24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered? 25 But thus saith the Lord, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contends with thee, and I will save thy children.”

Revelation 1:4-6 (NIV) 4John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, 5and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father – to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.”

There are many promises that I would call “promise land promises”. They are reserved for those who truly cross the Jordan river, are willing and able in Christ to see the Giants be driven out of the Promised Land (see the story of the fall of Jericho and marvel at how the people part was totally doable and how God did all the big impossible parts), AND choose to leave Egypt fully behind themselves ( physically and in their thinking, habits and identity).   I believe that being in radiant health is such a promise for most people. Thankfully, being healed is actually a separate issue. Anyone and everyone who can find a righteous man such as the one described in the book of James is guaranteed healing. The challenge today is finding such a man. But that is not a shortfall on God’s end, that is a shortfall on man’s part, which means that it is also something that we can see restored to the community through prayer and seeking God as He instructs us to do.

The capacity to see everyone we pray for healed, I personally believe, based on that same chapter (James 5) is something that God intended for every church to have but that in this present day we clearly don’t see.   The clues that we are given in James define such a person as being:

  1. An elder (see the verses in the comments to understand what type of person scripture is referring to when it speaks of an elder)
  2. Capable of praying the biblical prayer of faith. This is radically different than the emotional prayer of faith that we are capable of praying as young believers. One is the prayer of faith of a carnal fleshly mind. This mind does not know THE Truth, nor cannot it (see 1 Corinthians 2) and therefore  it cannot truly comprehend scripture and is incapable of overcoming it’s own nature to pray in Spirit and in Truth.
  3. a Righteous man… “the prayer of a righteous man availeth much”
  4. Power???   Of course, we must always consider Jesus first and foremost as the role model that we set before our eyes.   We see that Jesus was/is filled with the Spirit without limit and that of course, being the Word of God made flesh, that His knowledge and understanding of the Bible was/is of course perfect.  Scripture records that He felt power leave Him when the sick touched Him and were healed.  Truly Jesus was overflowing with the  Truth of the Word and the power of Spirit.   We can say at least in some cases that there needs to be power to heal the sick.    Even He was limited though when operating here on Earth.   Scripture records that in an environment of unbelief, healing happened through physical contact as well, via the laying on of hands .  We do see this element also echoed in James 5, with the contact in the form of annointing with oil.

Scripture plainly says THE prayer of faith WILL heal the sick. So if someone is still sick after prayer, the humbling reality is that it means the biblical prayer of faith  has not yet been prayed for the person.

God’s Word never contradicts itself but builds on itself. No verse stands alone, they work together perfectly with all the other verses and when we consider the full counsel of God on any topic, the tough questions that come up are very often answered plainly.

There are typically few in a community who rise up to this level of walking with the Lord and dying to themselves etc.   We can plainly see throughout the whole History of the Word, that Our Heavenly Father, raised up spiritual heroes for the whole body to benefit from. They followed Moses out of Egypt. They sort of followed Joshua into the promised land. They followed Gideon. Abraham was the one faithful man who paved the way for all. The prophets Elijah and Elisha were leaders as well. Noah was the only one that stood between the annihilation of all mankind. In each case, it was a man who said YES wholly, 100%, with his whole life that stood in the gap and intervened for the whole community. One common element (I am sure we could find several more) in all these men is that they rose above their state of being just a natural man, to being a man annointed with the Holy Spirit who was able to walk by faith and not by sight.

I believe this capacity is available to us all, but the cost is all, so few are willing to truly pay it. It is the righteous man who can plunder the strong man’s goods and rescue the lawful captives from their prisons. It is the righteous man whose hedge of protection is solid and whose defenses and offenses are established, who rests utterly on the Lord and His Might and His authority. It is the righteous man who is willing to look at the giants and the fortifications of Jericho and say with 100% confidence, “It’s a piece of cake, God is with us, we can take them”.

Someone who can act completely and immediately to the facts and truths they see int he Word and hear plainly from the Lord how to apply these in any and every situation:

Luke 7:26-29 New Living Translation (NLT)  “26 Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet. 27 John (the Baptist) is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say,  ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.’[a]  28 I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!”

Luke 10:19 (NLT)  “Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.”

1 John 4:1-4 Berean Study Bible “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you will know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming, and is already in the world at this time. 4 You, little children, are from God and have overcome them, because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”

Someone who can believe God’s Word above all the input of their five physical senses. Someone who has a revelation of absolute authority over these things that Jesus’ death and resurrection has re-established in us. Someone who understands the legal elements of setting the legal captives free and how to lawfully release them from their prison cells. Someone who has moved beyond my personal present understanding of these things to be sure. Thankfully, my job is not to become that person, although truly that is part of my prayer life. My assigned job from scripture is to pray for the needed workers to be raised up and give my life to the Lord to shape and lead me as He wills.

I believe it is necessary because we are not defending our territory, we are taking back the land that the enemy has occupied, sometimes for generations. We need wisdom, we need God, we need His knowledge, His strength, etc., to overcome the enemy’s defenses and knowledge and strongholds.

Sometimes we have to act as priest – the one that has the ability to see the sins of another atoned for as they are lawfully captive to the enemy and/or sickness due to sin; sometimes as king – the one that overcomes by might. We are plundering the enemy’s goods, we are storming his castles and ramparts and he does not choose to vacate if given any choice whatsoever to remain. But, praise God, for the battle belongs to the Lord! The victory has been won by the atoning sacrifice of Jesus, God’s gift of grace to us. God is faithful, and He has promised to lead us into all truth and into the fullness of His Kingdom.

God’s Word stands waiting for us daily, beckoning us with this simple and yet beyond believable promise, “If you seek my Kingdom and my righteouness first (OUR PART), I will give you everything else you need”.

What to Read in Preparation for this week May 28 and May 30th

Hello!

What we will be covering this week (we typically get through 9 to 12 verses each week):

Topic 1, Page 6  James 1:22-25 for the Tuesday group,

Page 3 from  Matthew 15:25-30 for Thursday night.      We will be focussing on the verses in bold print.

Discussion time:  We will see what comes up.

Reminders:  As we get more comfortable with each other, RESIST the urge to “speak into each others lives”  and to correct one another.  We do this so naturally that it really does take effort to resist this tendency.     I have caught myself now doing this so my sincere apologies.   We won’t of course be perfect but I thank you all for putting forth your  best for the moment and being gracious and merciful with one another and me.

For those who will appreciate it, I plan to highlight one main point after each verse.

I am recognizing that we are at so many levels in our group.    This would perhaps give those who would like this something simple to write own and think about.    I am very open to suggestions on how to make sure that there is something accesible for everyone there.

I do want to encourage you all.   As some have insightfully mentioned, the language of the Bible, actually the language of faith, is very much like a foreign language.    It is just this year that King James actually makes sense to me (I am 13 years into my studying the Word).       The fastest way to learn any new language is through immersion.   While it doesn’t feel like it at the time, our brains, yes, no matter what age, are made to understand languages.  It is easier for the young but even the older ones can do it, especially now that we have the help of the Holy Spirit.

Keep in mind that you have been transferred from one kingdom, that has one language.  But now you are part of the Kingdom of the Son, which honestly comes with a whole other English dialect.   Scripture tells us that the language of this kingdom is so foreign to the natural man, that without the help of Holy Spirit, it is actually impossible to understand it.

The image that came to mind was that of a fruit tree.  We just planted several in our garden.   Here is what we were told to expect..     Not much in the first year.  No real perceivable growth as all of the work the plant is doing is happening underground.  The second year, likely will see some growth in the branches and leaves… but fruit, the fruit only in the 3rd or 4th year after the(albeit large) plant has time to get established and have enough roots to support the growth of the fruit.   The Word is at work in you.  If you are reading in and hearing it, things that you cannot necessarily see or sense are happening.     So if you are feeling like… “I am just not getting it”  “this doesn’t make sense” etc.. hang in.  The Word is at work growing out your roots and establishing you in the truth of His Word.

Summary of practical suggestions :

What to Read in Preparation for this week May 21 and May 23rd

Hello!

What we will be covering this week:

Topic 1, Page 2, starting with Psalm 23:5  to page 5,  Isaiah 55:10-11.    We will be focussing on the verses in bold print.

Discussion time: Paul’s thorn and ???

Reminders:   To keep things orderly, we will read the Bible verses by going around the table, please knock or tap the table if you prefer not read on any given night.  No explanation ever is required.  You are fully participating just by coming and listening.

I am noticing over the last week, we are all getting more comfortable with each other.  Just a little reminder to RESIST the urge to correct one another’s doctrine or answers.  The more we get to know one another, the harder this one gets.     The Holy Spirit will sort us all out over time.

Again, wow, I just want to say thank you for the grace and mercy shown by all as we have talked about 2 really tough questions already.   Of course, non of us have perfect theology.    Continue to be Berean and hear the truth for yourself by going back to the Word.

Summary of practical suggestions :

Topic 1 The Word (Colour Coded and commentary added)

Psalm 119:18  “Uncover my eyes so that I may see the miraculous things in your teaching” [God’s Word Translation GWT]

1 Corinthians 8:1-3 “Now regarding your question about food that has been offered to idols. Yes, we know that “we all have knowledge” about this issue. But while knowledge makes us feel important, it is love that strengthens the church. Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much. But the person who loves God is the one whom God recognizes.”

Everything really truly hinges on us having a deep abiding relationship with God.  Loving God and receiving His love I think are the springboards to all other kingdom living

1.The Word of God itself has the power to heal us

Psalm 107:20  (KJV) “He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”

Key point:  The Word itself has the power to heal us and deliver us.

Proverbs 4:20-23  (KJV) “20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. 21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. 22For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

Key point:  Our part in being healed by His Word:   Listening attentively to God’s Word and chewing on them, thinking about them repeatedly will lead to the healing of our whole bodies.

Truly, we need to guard what gets into our heart.  This happens through our five senses.  We have to guard what we lay are hands on, our eyes to see, our ears to hear, the people we spend our time with etc.      Over and over again scripture warns us that if these things are not pure, are hearts are being filled with all the wrong things.

2._Everything of God and His Kingdom are birthed in us through His Word, the Incorruptible Seed

1 Peter 1:22-25 (KJV) “22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:  23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.  24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”

Key point:  The Word of God is perfect and nothing can cause it to rot or perish or be changed in any way.   Everything of God in us comes through hearing and acting on His Word.    There is no other way to Truth and His Kingdom.

Themes:

  • the need for us to be purified/pure, and to actively participate in this process and let God do this work in us through relationship with Him and His Word
  • We are empowered by the Spirit to do what is otherwise impossible… Love our brothers and sisters with unfeigned love.
  • The seed is good, we have to keep it in us and water it for it to sprout and grow to fruitfulness.  If we do our part, the seed cannot fail and will never rot or diminish in anyway.  It is always there, just waiting for us to do our part to burst forth and bring all the promised fruit.  Truly we must feed on every word of God daily and choose to meditate on it often/constantly.

James 1:18 “Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.”

Key point:   The Word itself is what births all things of God in us.

  • God wills for us to be his creatures, and He does the work in us through His Word.
  • We are citizens of His Kingdom.  We have a new identity in Christ.
  • There is no way to bypass being birthed by the Word itself.     By design, we were made to need food, air, water, nurture etc to really thrive.  Above all these things, by design, we were made to and our live literally depend on feeding on the Word of God.   Many are sick and week and miserable, mentally suffering, relationally suffering or simply not fruitful in the Kingdom  because they are living in a state of chronic deficiency.
  • Equally, man was designed to be grafted in to the vine, living in a state of abiding relationship with God.  Again, humanly speaking, we tend to operate on put in the least amount of effort with the hopes of the maximum return.  This is why so many marriages are in the state that they are in.    We are the branches, He is the vine.   If we are not tapped into Him, we will never really thrive, be fruitful or truly LIVE as He made us to live.   Just as a flower will surely die once it is cut from its stem, even though we have the appearance of life for a season, we are spiritually dying if we do not have the living sap, the love and life of God running through us.
  • So many are trying to self-help themselves, diet manage themselves, pep talk themselves, comfort themselves through hobbies and or addicions, or distract themselves to avoid feeling the symptoms of this deficiency through endless forms of entertainments and activities.        This is one of the very best ways to share the gospel.  Every human being not tapped into God is hurting from the separation.  This is the most common path through which I personally share the gospel.      There is an answer, there is a way to fill that hole, that hurt, that question, that inward longing, that desire for peace, that desire for joy, that desire for purpose etc.   JESUS CHRIST.
  • This means that God has given us the power to stop and or stunt our own growth in that we limit Him in the measure that we are willing to obey and abide and spend time with Him.   He will do everything else, but we must choose to prioritize Him and the Kingdom and set apart time to really pay attention and listen to Him and His Word.

3._God’s Word is 100% essential to our physical, mental and spiritual health_(Deficiencies will cause adverse effects)______

Deuteronomy 8:3 “Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”

key point:  Your physical and spiritual health are dependent on you “feeding on God’s Word”.

  • Self-reliance will almost surely separate a man from God.   If our needs can be perfectly and fully met by our own hands or by other people, would we ever turn to the Lord.  In James it says the rich man fades away while he goes about his business.   In the story of the feeding of the five thousand, we see that Jesus knew that the people sought him because He fed them and healed them.   At the end of the day, that is really His goal,   That we would come to HIM, so that we realize it is Him that we really need and that in Him, all of our other needs (not perceived needs and wordly wants necessarily) are perfectly met and/or exceeded (remember 12 baskets of food left over).
  • Job knew of God, but didn’t know God until he faced a season of trial where he had to believe and rely on God even when it didn’t look good.   Perhaps Paul’s real issue with the thorn in the flesh is related to this same thing.  Paul had so much knowledge that He could have easily relied on His knowledge and come to rely on it instead of God.    It was the comfort and the direction and the relationship with God were ultimately the well from which the men had to draw to overcome and finish their own races well.

Matthew 4:4  (KJV)  “4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

Key Point:  There are zero superfluous verses in the Bible.   Every book and every verse is there for a purpose so reading the whole Bible in some sort of routine way is essential.

  • In our home, we do a three year Bible reading schedule.  We use this one from Moody https://www.moodychurch.org/bible-reading-plans/ click on the 3 year plan for the pdf
  • The very same words echoed by our Lord and Savior Himself when He was tempted by the Enemy.   This is surely one of the keys to the victorious christian life.

Matthew 22:1-10 (ESV) “And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, 2 “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, 3 and sent his servants[a] to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. 4 Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’ 5 But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, 6 while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. 7 The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ 10 And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.”

Revelation 3:20 (KJV) “ I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

  • God is always waiting on our part.   He is always at the door of some part of our life knocking and waiting for us to let Him in and establish His Kingdom in some part of our lives that we have kept Him firmly shut out of.   All we have to do is find an area where we can’t/won’t obey Him and you can know for certain that it is us not letting Him be Lord of that part of our life and not Him desiring to be locked out.
  • the imagery of the feast runs through scripture.  Abundance, comfort, relationship, intimacy with God

John 6:35  (KJV)  “35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”

key point: Jesus is the bread of life, by reading His Word and meditating on it, we are feeding on Him.  He is the only way to satisfy our hunger and thirst totally.

  • If we put His Kingdom truly first, he has promised to provide everything else we need.   I think Jesus was promising both physically and spiritually that we would lack nothing.   Some verses below to support this.

Matthew 6:32-34 King James Version (KJV)
32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.  34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Acts 4:33-35 King James Version (KJV)
33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.  34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,35 And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.

Psalm 23:1 “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” (the whole Psalm is of course wonderful beyond words)

Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 34:9
Fear the LORD, you His saints, for those who fear Him lack nothing.

Luke 22:35 King James Version (KJV)
35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.

Week 2 of this topic

Psalm 23:5  (KJV) “5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.”

key point:  God has laid out a feast (His Word) for us that is available even in the very midst of our deepest troubles.

  • Our worst moments, our dryest deserts, our deepest trials are the place where God has prepared the most lavish feasts for us.   They have the potential to be our greatest encounters with God and His faithfulness.  They have the most potential to glorify God.   The more impossible the situation, the more glory He receives when He delivers us from them.   Your greatest challenge is very possibly your most powerful testimony waiting to happen.
  • Really stop and visualize this whole thing.   It is wild to think about someone setting up a table and chairs, a place of abundance and celebration while surrounded by a pack of wolves.  Now, let’s stop and fill in some biblical details of why this makes total sense.      Take a closer look.   See that wolves are caged, muzzled, detoothed and powerless to hurt you.   See that they are there to witness to and be evidence of Your Lord’s absolute victory over them.    They are there so you can see for yourself the state to which they have been reduced so you no longer have to live in fear that they are free roaming and fully armed out there somewhere seeking your harm.
  • The NT tells us that Jesus has publicly shamed and disarmed our enemies.       Colossians 2:15 New Living Translation (NLT) “15 In this way, he disarmed[a] the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.”   This is our positioning as NT believers.
  •  In Roman times, they practiced something called a triumphant entry.  It was a time of great rejoicing.   The victorious general would get all dressed up and be celebrated in a triumphal procession when he returned to the city.  The enemy leaders would be shackled, and at times maimed severally (blinded and their sword hand chopped off) and led through the city as well to prove to the citizens that their foe has been thoroughly defeated and that all cause for fear is gone.   Jesus HAS overcome our enemy, Satan is a publicly disarmed and shamed foe.    When we start living according to who we are and what He has done, we can truly enter into His rest and joyfully become involved in preparing the feast for others, in the presence of our enemies, but of course freed from all fear knowing that they truly have lost all power to harm us. (Luke 10:19)

Matthew 7:8-12  (KJV)  “8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.  9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?  11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?   12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”

Key point:  God is GOOD and gives good gifts.   If we ask for something good, He gives us something good.  He does not trick us and give us something miserable to give us the good thing we asked for.

Themes:

  • Persistence to see the fulfillment of all that God has promised is a Kingdom attribute:  Language clarifications: the tenses in this verse more correctly read “for everyone who keeps on asking, receives, everyone who keeps on seeking, finds”  The Passion Translation (TPT) captures this in verse 8 “ For every persistent one will get what he asks for.”  We see this in Romans 4:16-22
  • Romans 4:16-22 The Passion Translation (TPT)  “16 The promise depends on faith so that it can be experienced as a grace-gift, and now it extends to all the descendants of Abraham. This promise is not only meant for those who obey the law, but also to those who enter into the faith of Abraham, the father of us all. 17 That’s what the Scripture means when it says:  “I have made you the father of many nations.”[a]  He is our example and father, for in God’s presence he believed that God can raise the dead and call into being things that don’t even exist yet.[b] 18 Against all odds, when it looked hopeless, Abraham believed the promise and expected God to fulfill it.[c] He took God at his word, and as a result he became the father of many nations. God’s declaration over him came to pass:  “Your descendants will be so many      that they will be impossible to count!”[d]  19 In spite of being nearly one hundred years old when the promise of having a son was made, his faith was so strong that it could not be undermined by the fact that he and Sarah[e] were incapable of conceiving a child. 20–21 He never stopped believing God’s promise, for he was made strong in his faith[f] to father a child. And because he was mighty in faith and convinced that God had all the power needed to fulfill his promises, Abraham glorified God!22 So now you can see why Abraham’s faith was credited to his account as righteousness before God.[g]”

  • Prayer is one of the most broadly taught on topics I know in scripture.  There are so many verses that really reveal more about prayer.  James 4:3 tells us we can pray amiss and ask according to our human perspective and not receive what we ask for.  James 1 also tells us that if we pray with doubt, we should expect to receive nothing from God.  James 1:6.  Mark 11:24  “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”  John 15:7  “If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. ”   Even the prayer of faith of Elijah quoted at the end of James was a prayer of a righteous man prayed with absolute expectation and persistence.
  • The Question came up why don’t we always see answers to prayer for healing of someone?   Why does it seem like years pass as we pray?    The short answer:  Their are some spiritual legal issues involved that sometimes we don’t perceive and/or don’t quite no how to deal with.      I will create another post and attempt to answer this as this is really a much bigger answer.  Isaiah 49:24-25 “24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?  25 But thus saith the Lord, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.”

Matthew 15:25-30  (KJV) “25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.  26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.  27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.29 And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.  30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them:”

Key Point: Healing is the bread of the children.  Jesus taught us to pray, give us this day our daily bread.   Healing and deliverance are daily provisions that God wants us to seek Him for.

  • The multitudes “came unto him” with  those who were lame, blind, dum, maimed and others and “cast them down at Jesus feet”.   And He healed them
  • There are only a few examples where the great personal faith of a person results in someone getting healed in scripture, and this is one of them.   Against seemingly all, this foreign woman (interesting that the centurion was not a Jew either, that somehow it is actually easier for those outside of the faith to believe and seek Jesus for healing) sees and persists in receiving from Jesus what she sees He is capable of and willing to do.   This is very very encouraging for those who are intercessors, as these verses tell us that we can bring people to Jesus, and see them healed even at a distance as this woman’s daughter was healed at “that very hour” without anyone laying hands on her or speaking over her directly.   Truly the prayers and petitions of a righteous one avail much.
  • If you are maimed like I am from surgery or otherwise, this is an excellent verse.  He healed those who were maimed (crooked or mutilated, especially in the hands and feet) and restored them to health. http://www.blbclassic.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G2948&t=KJV and http://www.blbclassic.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G2323&t=KJV.   see also Matthew 12:10-20 of  a more detailed description of what this looked like.  There are many testimonies of missing body parts being restored. Asuza Street Revival had several including limbs growing out that were amputated in work accidents, I have read several of women who had hysterectomies who went on to have healthy babies.

Luke 11:2-4  (KJV) “2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.   3 Give us day by day our daily bread.  4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.”

Key point:  Your will be done (here on earth) as it already is being done in heaven.   There is no sickness, no death, no disease, no blemish, no brokenness, no maimedness, in heaven.   We can know absolutely for a fact that God’s will is NOT happening on earth as it is in heaven but that He desires this.    Praying for healing and wholeness glorifies God as do all things that bring His will to pass on earth. We can know 100% that these are a product of the fall…. they are part of the fall out of the sting of sin entering the world.

So so much to chew on here.  Each point of monumental importance to understanding the Kingdom here on earth as it is in Heaven.  I cannot encourage you to chew on each one before considering any points that others share with you.

  • Our Father – This is a HUGE revelation and shift from the Old Testament.    Jesus introduced us and made it possible for us to be called children of God.   At no time in history prior to Jesus’ time here on earth did any human get to call the Creator “Father”  “Abba”.      Jesus perfectly modelled walking out life as God’s Son with all of the benefits of being His child, all the while reverencing  and 100% submitting to Him as LORD.    This is a big theme that we will see throughout the New Testament.   We will never truly understand who we are and what our new identity is in Christ if we don’t come to a place of understanding what changed when God revealed Himself as “Our Father”
  • Which art in heaven – If you read in Leviticus, you can see just how many steps the High Priest (and only the High Priest could) had to go through to enter into God’s presence (only once per year was permitted).   To enter into his presence and Kingdom, we also need to meet certain criteria.   Jesus has totally redefined how we do this and what it looks like.   We will explore this theme ongoing.  We were just reading Habbakuk as a family and it really jumped out to me that God can set no impure thing before His eyes…   God is Holy, to enter into His presence, we need to put on holiness.  This is only possible in Christ.   This is the reason why no one can get to the Father without going through Jesus.   Fear of the Lord is the beginning of all knowledge and wisdom  (Proverbs 1:7)

Proverbs 1:7 King James Version (KJV)  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Psalm 111:10 King James Version (KJV) “10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.”

  • Hallowed be thy name – God is absolutely Holy, we need to approach Him in this light and allow Him to change our thinking and lives so that everything we do reflects the holy-ness of His person and name fully.    As His children, we must allow Him to make us Holy and blameless so that others looking at our lives see a reflection of Him and His kingdom plainly.
  • Thy Kingdom Come – We are called to be Ambassadors of reconciliation to preach the gospel to every creature…     God has called all believers to deny themselve, pick up their cross (die to themselves) and follow Jesus (do as He did and even greater things see John 14:12) so that God’s Kingdom can come to the multitudes.  Luke 2:49 tells us Jesus was about His Father’s business even in his youth…
  • Thy will be done-   Jesus wouldn’t be instructing us to pray for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven if it were already happening.   There are a lot of things going on in the world that are outside of God’s will and certainly brought Jesus himself to weeping.   The verse below illustrates what happens when God has a will but no human intercessor to stand in the gap.   He has delegated certain works in His Word to mankind.  God simply cannot break His Word as He has perfect integrity and is perfectly Just.  We must earnestly realize that sometimes mankind’s or individual disobedience to a prompting from God has immense impact.   If God prompt’s me, I try to constantly remind myself I might be the only one He has for the work He is prompting me to do.

Ezekiel 22:29-31 King James Version (KJV) 29 The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.  30 And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.  31 Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord God.

  • as in heaven, so on earth – I personally scripture through a specific lens and this really hits home for me.   There have been/will be 3 times in all of history where God gets to express His will perfectly on earth.   1st.  Prefall.  It was very good.  2nd.  In and through Jesus when He was walking on this earth.   If you want a picture of what a perfect God and perfect man look like in a fallen world, read and chew heartily on every verse that describes Jesus and His in the flesh earthly ministry.  You are seeing what it look like for God’s perfect will and way to operate in the midst of the falleness that surrounded Him.   3rd.  The New Heaven and New Earth after sin and death have been fully evicted.     I love to meditate on these passages and encourage myself with eternity and to let God reveal to me what His perfect will looks like.
  • give us this day our daily bread – main point I was making above.   Pay attention to the things Jesus calls bread.  These are things that He considers necessary and of daily importance.
  • forgive us our sins as we forgive others
  • Keep us from temptation
  • set us from evil
  • thine is the Kingdom
  • the power
  • the glory
  • forever – a final reminder that everything is best understood in the context of eternity and that God the Un-Created one who always was and will always be.

John 6:32-37  (KJV) “32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.  34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.  35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.  6 But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.  37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”

John 6:48-54  (KJV) “48 I am that bread of life.   49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.  50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.  51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.  52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?  53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.  54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Isaiah 53 prophesied what Jesus would accomplish through His body and blood being sacrificed for us.    Psalm 103:1-4 echoes this..   We see this in the Lord’s Supper.   Jesus did nothing that was not required and did not accomplish something to advance God’s Kingdom.  I encourage you to keep your eyes and hearts open to learning all His Word has to say about what he paid for with His broken body, and what eating His body should bring to our remembrance and what drinking His blood should bring to our remembrance.   The price He paid for our salvation, our peace, our healing both physical and mental was in the form of the terrible suffering we went through, and torture beyond that which any natural man could bear…  even to deathand hell He sacrificed Himself.    When we learn to partake of the bread and blood fully, we begin to recognized and receive fully the benefits and  redemptions He dearly paid for us to have.

1 Peter 2:24 King James Version (KJV)  “24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”

1 Corinthians 10:15-17  (KJV) “15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.   16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?  17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.”

Deuteronomy 32:47  “These instructions are not empty words—they are your life! By obeying them you will enjoy a long life in the land you will occupy when you cross the Jordan River.”

Key point:  Scripture is not just a bunch of good advice.    Our life hangs in the balance.  Life abundantly can only come through obedience to the Word.     A Long satisfying life is a byproduct of a life of obedience to God’s instructions.   This goes a really long  way in explaining why the rich and famous are not happy and joyful and peaceful even in their seeming “success”.   The kind of abundance we were created to enjoy can only be enjoyed when we are walking according to the paths our Creator has put before us.

  • We simply must cross the Jordan and face our giants if we are going to occupy the promised land of the Lord.

John 6:63  “The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Key point:  Humanly speaking, no human effort can give true life to anyone.   God’s words ARE spirit and life and are essential, absolutely essential to true life.    We bought some roots and bulbs this year.   One particular bag of “roots” looked so dried and shrivelled I would have tossed them if I had been looking at them strictly in the natural.  They are presently green bunches of leaves all through by flower beds and well on their way to being lovely ronunculus flowers.    We also bought some other “roots” that did not take quite so well and produced a 50% return only.    People are often the opposite.  They have pink cheeks and a smile so we think that they must be relatively healthy..   But spiritually speaking they are dead to eternal life as long as the Word is not in them and through them.   Appearances can be so so deceiving.

Psalm 81:10 “For it was I, the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things.

Key point:  This verse always reminds me of a newborn baby’s need to latch on to nurse properly.   The very first step is getting them to open their mouths wide.   We need to be like a newborn understanding that the Word is the milk that we must open our mouths wide for and when we do, God, the perfect Father has promised to fill it with good things.

Ya ya.. but what does that look like practically? Clearly we don’t just hang around all day like a baby bird chirping and asking for a worm etc to be dropped in our mouths physically.   But the posture we take is very similar.   I have 4 babies, and thankfully, (I love the blessing of the breast and the womb) we have had 4 excellent nursers.  But at the beginning it took a lot longer for them to get the milk they needed.   By the time they were weaning, they were all nursing champs.    Set time apart, open your spiritual mouth by praying as we so often pray in group.  “Heavenly Father, I ask you for eyes to see and ears to hear and the ability to really understand your Word.   Scripture says that these thing are gifts from you.   I ask you to remove any veils and scales or other hindrances/blocks that are keeping me from really hearing from you and your Word.   In Jesus name.”  And commit to a regular Bible study window, giving your full attention to what you read and continually seeking to know who God is, what He is like, what He is asking you to do etc…      Do not read it to get through it, read it to understand what God is communicating to you and your life in that passage.  You will be amazed at what starts to speak to you and how relevent all of scripture becomes to your life.

Psalm 119:93”I will never forget your commandmentsfor by them you give me life.”

Key Point:  God heals us and give us life through His Word.   God’s commandments are all very intentional.  By obeying them, we can walk in life and obedience long before we are spiritually mature enough to understand the why’s of why they are given and essential.

There is a why behind every commandment in there.   Just as we can all recall our parents or guardians telling us certain things over and over again “Don’t snack right before supper, you’ll spoil your appetite” etc..  in hindsight some very practical and common sense guidelines to healthy living, God’s Word is full of instructions that lead to spiritual health and holiness.    Even when we are too young in our understanding to understand all the why’s, we are blessed if we honour them.  I can only imagine what my 4 years olds life would like without a parent to offer him counsel and structure.     As we walk with Christ, we tend to find out more and more about the why’s and realize that all along, his instructions, prohibitions, and commands were all given in love, to protect us and lead us into every blessings He has planned for us.

This reminds me of the very beginning.  God made man out of clay and breathed (spoke) life into Him.   This verse plainly echoes what has been so from the beginning.   His Word is the delivery system of life.

4.__The Word helps us in Understanding and Assuming Our Original/newly re-released Identity_______

James 1:22-25 KJV “22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:  24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.  25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

2 Corinthians 5:6-8  (KJV) “6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:  7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)  8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”

Key point: Scripture and only scripture can reveal to us who we really are and what we are truly capable of.

We don’t often stop and think about it, but our identity is very very often a byproduct of a number of very highly subjective things.   Our 5 senses, our experiences, our memories, the words of our friends and family members, even those of total strangers, the books we have read, the movies we have seen,  our life up to this point, act as witnesses and tell us who we are and what we are like.    They do so in such a convincing way that we take it for granted that none of these things are actually reliable witnesses.    Depending on which culture, era, family, country etc we live in, all of these things, what is perceived as admirable, admirable, etc are all very much subjective.   Scripture tells us all sorts of things about who we really are.  I encourage you to seek God first and his righteousness, but also come to look for yourself in His Word.     He tells you all sorts of things about yourself that you will never know without meditating on his Word.    The hand outs we gave on the first day are a perfect example and wonderful sampling of the things that God says about you.   You are the apple of His eye and His thoughts about you truly are countless and greater in number than all the grains of sand on the earth.. WOW!!!   God places so much value in who we are and who He created us to be, that He sent His Son to die for YOU and ME.   For some who struggle with self worth, this is unfathomable but absolutely true.   He never ever loses trak of who we really are underneath the burden of sin and sickness and worldliness that is constantly tripping us up.   Every other lens we can look through gets our true likeness wrong.  Scripture goes on to tell us that as we look into His Word and let us transform us,we will go from strength to strength and glory to glory…   Literally the more we look into this mirror, the more we will reflect our true and fully redeemed natures. HOW encouraging.

5.__Jesus is and the Word of God are one and the same________________

John 1:1-5 + 14 “In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself. He was present originally with God. All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being. In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men. And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it].”  +  “And the Word (Christ) became flesh (human, incarnate) and tabernacled (fixed His tent of flesh, lived awhile) among us; and we [actually] saw His glory (His honor, His majesty), such glory as an only begotten son receives from his father, full of grace (favor, loving-kindness) and truth.” [Amplified Bible]

Jesus has always existed.  Before being born of the virgin, He was called, among other things simply the Word.   He was given a human name when He was born to a human mother and bears that name still today.   But Jesus has always been and “all things were made and came into existence through Him”.   If you are ever tempted to think how in the world can God fix the mess that is my health, my life, my????    Rest assured, the One who spoke and created the whole universe from nothing  is more than able to redeem and restore and fix everything.   Nothing is impossible or difficult for our Creator.

6.__We can be confident because the Word CANNOT fail

Isaiah 55:10-11  ““The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow,  producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit.  It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.”

Our biggest challenge is simply not letting the world crowd the Word out of our hearts and lives.   If the Word remains in us long enough, He will win.   It is that simple.   But there is nothing harder to do in the natural. In fact, it is humanly impossible.    We need God’s help even in this very simple thing.    The enemy will try by every means to get you off the Word because if he can get you to set your eyes elsewhere, you are easy prey.

Practical application:   Start with one thing God is showing you in His Word, and convicting you about.  Camp in that place until your whole life becomes a reflection of His Word in that area.   There are limitless examples.    One that we have mentioned before is take full responsibility for your buttons.  If someone we know is pushing our buttons, they are not the problem.   There will always be someone the enemy can send to push those buttons.  How could he not take advantage of such a marvelous foothold.     How to do this?  Be transparent with God and other true believers..  Find verses about who you are and then allow God to transform your thinking and habits accordingly.   Be prepared to eat a lot of humble pie as you are called to instantly and often apologize to others and ask God for forgiveness.    Humble pie is a great motivator.

Another example would be gluttony and addictions:   The fruit of the Spirit is self-control.   Most of us can quickly name things that we are prone to doing in excess.    Screen time is one that I fight with during certain windows (2-3 hours of tv was quite normal in my home growing up, I still fight cravings to sit down in front of a screen and let it eat up my time).  Sugar can be another one.    If i eat a lot of sugar, I crave a lot of sugar. The less I eat (hard at first, the better I feel and the less I crave it)… But if i open that door up again with a few sugary days, it can feel like I am starting the fight all over again.  I am not, and I get over it much more quickly but the pull is there.  Praise God, in both of these things, my appetite are steadily and over time decreasing and I am feeling the pull less and less to fall prey to them.   I guarantee God is talking to all of us about something that we could be “letting” Him help us with more than we did yesterday.

1 Thessalonians 2:13 “Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn’t think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the very word of God—which, of course, it is. And this word continues to work in you who believe.

Key Point:  Scripture is all from God.   We must treat it as gospel truth.    The Word is beyond and above human ideas and is not the product of human authors.  It was 100% inspired by God and authored by God through human hands but God’s heart and will and truth.  Not that the Word only continues to work in those who believe

2 Timothy 2:9 “And because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained.

Key Point:  The Word of God cannot be contained or chained.   It will continue to work wherever it is sent.  This is an amazing promise.

7._____The Word of God is absolutely true and pure and complete

Isaiah 45:23 “I have sworn by my own name; I have spoken the truth, and I will never go back on my word: Every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will confess allegiance to me”

Key point:  God never goes back on His Word.   His decrees are eternal and work in harmony with every other word in the Bible.   God has perfect integrity.

Psalm 12:6  (KJV) “6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.”

Key Point:  The Word in it’s pure form as we find it in scripture is absolutely trustworth and true.  We have to be so mindful of how often we are tempted to add or take away from it.   To do so is to contaminate and at times make even the Word of God of no effect.    While a glass of water is life giving, a glass of water laced with poison is lethal.   Satan loves to twist and add just enough falsehood to the Word to render it useless in our lives.  We need to guard our hearts and eyes against such things.

Psalm 18:30  (KJV) “30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.”

Isaiah 45:22-23  (ESV) 22 “Turn to me and be saved,     all the ends of the earth!    For I am God, and there is no other. 23 By myself I have sworn;   from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return:  ‘To me every knee shall bow,    every tongue shall swear allegiance.’”

Psalm 89:34 “My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.”

Psalm 119:160  “The sum of Your word is truth [the total of the full meaning of all Your individual precepts]; and every one of Your righteous decrees endures forever.” [The Amplified]

Key point:   Not one point in scripture ever disappears.  There are things that are fulfilled, things that are specific to a specific group or person.

“The very essence of your words is truth; all your just regulations will stand forever.” [NLT]

Psalm 148:6 “He set them in place forever and ever. His decree will never be revoked.”

Isaiah 40:8  (ESV) “8 The grass withers, the flower fades,     but the word of our God will stand forever.”

2 Samuel 7:28 “For you are God, O Sovereign Lord. Your words are truth, and you have promised these good things to your servant.”

START OF SESSION 2

8.__The Word is our only offensive and defensive weapon but more than sufficient

Matthew 4:1-11 “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry.  During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”  But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”  Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’”  Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’” Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.  “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.”  “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”  Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.”

Key Point:   We see Jesus Himself in action here effectively and powerfully resisting temptation, submitting to God and His Word and then seeing the devil leave as a result.   Whatever Jesus models for us is with deep meditation and consideration.   His primary defense “It is written”  Jesus defended Himself with the Word.

  • Self-control and the ability to deny self are ESSENTIAL.   If we have a known weakness, sin with capitalize on it.   Satan came at Jesus with the same kinds of temptations he comes at us with.  He appealed to Jesus’ fleshly appetites trying to entice him with food (while he was in a 40 day fast), with recklessness and looking to God for protection whilst in the midst of rebelling against his Word and wisdom,  and Self-centeredness and self-glorification.  We can learn so so much about what Jesus teaches us here.    We can sometimes make light of things like the inability to moderate our eating and the need for the approval and encouragement of others.   If Jesus lacked self control over Himself, He would have failed during this time of temptation.    I believe fasting and prayer and crucifying self and the flesh are ESSENTIAL for us to be equipped to resist and stand on the Word relentlessly when the enemy comes at us.
  • Jesus never lost track of His Father’s will and plan.  He submitted 100% to God’s Word and simply did not entertain any of the enemy’s attempts to get him to doubt God’s goodness and truth.
  • When the time of testing and tempation that the Holy Spirit led Him into was over, Jesus received ministry from angels.  Often, we look to other people after a tough go, and not to our Heavenly Father’s provision and ministrations via His angels.  This was a really powerful thing for me to realize as so often we look to those who have hurt us to “make it better” or “make it up to us” and end up getting hurt even more when they don’t/won’t/ or can’t.
  • Note that this exchange continued until Jesus shut it down by sending the devil away.   Is it possible that we actually have this same power to shut down temptation using our God given authority? If so, surely this is something we need to understand and practice using.
  • The same account in Luke 4 tells us Jesus returned in the power of the Holy Spirit.   For whatever reason, Jesus needed to be 1.  baptized, 2. spend a 40 day window of time in the wilderness being tempted and fasting and praying 3. These things proceeded His ministry and Him operating in the power of the Holy Spirit.    I PERSONALLY believe that this is one of those things that we all have to go through and that it was forshadowed in the Old Testament to.   We are told they we baptized when they went through the Red Sea and baptized in the presence of the Spirit as they followed the cloud, we see that Jesus was baptized (immersed in water) and with the Holy Spirit descending on Him as a dove.   They were led out into the wilderness for a time and tempted there, but failed the tests, and therefore remained stuck in the wilderness..
  •  Jesus was led out into the wilderness but passed the tests with all expediency and returned in the power of the Spirit.    I think both are notable keys and worth meditating on until we see them manifest in our own lives.  When I compare these things, I see 2 big things right off the hop.
    • Jesus was utterly dead to self-will.  The Israelites remained fixated on self… self never died.  I am very convinced that we will always be stuck at least in part in the wilderness place of our own lives as long as self-will has not submitted to God’s will and plans.
    • Jesus trusted God 100%.  The Israelites trusted God to a point and were willing to follow Him if they were motivated enough in the moment to do so but just as often refused based on their own understanding and perceptions of the situation.  Jesus trusted God absolutely and did WHATEVER He told Him to do.

Proverbs 30:5 “Every word of God proves true.  He is a shield to all who come to him for protection.”

Key point:  EVERY word proves true.    So often, in the heat of it all, it can seem like God’s Word has fallen short or not delivered…..  BUT guaranteed, it has not and cannot fail.   When we finally do see things clearly, this will be totally evident.   So it takes faith to accept this and act accordingly now when our senses and experiencing and others are telling us otherwise.

At some point, we will hit a promise of God that seems so big, so good, so utterly impossible that our human capacity to truly receive it is simply insufficient.   These types of promises can only come through a revelation/rhema word.  Thankfully, the Word Himself imparts those who seek Him faithfully this kind of understanding.   EVERY word of God PROVES true, regardless of how hard it is to believe when we hear it through our human understanding and limited perspective.  See Romans 4:20-22 as an example of Abraham believing in spite of his humaness.

Psalm 149:6 “Let the praises of God be in their mouths, and a sharp sword in their hands”

Key Point:  Jesus knew the Word and was able to deflect and counter ever blow with the Word.    Someone mentioned the word sword here implies a short sword intended for close combat, not a long sword to swing wildly about.  What we can say between these two verses is that Jesus knew the Word well enough to recognize the omissions and twists that the enemy tried to add to the Word and readily responded with another verse that disarmed his enemy effectively.  When we learn to hear from the Holy Spirit and spend daily time in the Word, He can equip us in this way as well.   We referred to the Word being used with surgical precision.   Jesus used specific verses and did not simply “beat the air” and throw out everything He knew hoping that something would work.   Dear Father, teach me to know and understand the Word with the same measure of depth and power, in Jesus Christ name.

9.___________________________________________________________________________

Ezekiel 3:10 “Then he added, “Son of man, let all my words sink deep into your own heart first. Listen to them carefully for yourself.”

Key Point:  Before we can really share the Word with others effectively, investing our time to read  and re-read, to meditate on and consider the Word until it comes to life in our own understanding is so powerful.   Once I have gotten a hold of a truth, it is easy to teach it with joy and passion and power.   Learning it on a by rote level (the abilityt to parrot the words but not necessarily get the meaning) yields very little fruit.

****************  Week 2 Session 2 *********************************

John 15:7  “But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!

Key Point:  Our part is to abide in (continually think about and consider His Words and His nature and live accordingly) and keep His Words always before our eyes, THEN we will ask only according to His Will and will receive all that we therefore ask for.

John 8:31-32  “So Jesus said to those Jews who had  in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples. And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.”

Key Point:  The progressive present tense nature of the sentence, you will continually know the the Truth and will be continually (ongoing) be set more and more free promise is conditional on us abiding in His Word.   This is also saying that if we do NOT hold fast to His teachings and live according to them, we are NOT His disciples).

Joshua 1:8-9 “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.  This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Key Point:  Obedience is a fruit of reading and meditating on God’s Word continually.   We simply cannot be obedient if we have not taken the time to hide God’s Word in our hearts.   Obedience is really a fruit of abiding in God.

Luke 1:20  “For my words will certainly be fulfilled at the proper time.”

Key point:    Yes, some promises have an appointed fulfillment time.  In this case the context was the birth of John the baptist.  Very often, there is a conception time (seed planting time), an incubation time (a watering and growing season) and a birthing time (harvest) when it comes to the Word of God.   The Word is the incorruptible seed.  As we sow it and water it increasingly into our lives and the lives of others, we can grow impatient if we don’t understand this element.   Thankfully the healing of our flesh is not one of these wait a long time promises.   Jesus healed them all right away and did not send even one away to “learn from their sickness” to grow in their maturity or other fruit or to wait for his timing.  He simply healed them all.     The Word simply says that His best way to teach us and to grow us and to disciple us is via His Word.    The serpent wants us to add to the Word here and permit him to allow lengthy delays in our healing.   Don’t take the bait.  Today is the day of” soteria” /salavation.

Strong’s “σωτηρία sōtēría, so-tay-ree’-ah; feminine of a derivative of G4990 as (properly, abstract) noun; rescue or safety (physically or morally):—deliver, health, salvation, save, saving.”

2 Corinthians 6:2 The Passion Translation (TPT) 2 For he says,  I listened to you at the time of my favor.  And the day when you needed salvation,  I came to your aid.  So can’t you see? Now is the time to respond to his favor! Now is the day of salvation!”

 *****************Session 2 Week 3 *************************************

1 Chronicles 16:14-16  (KJV) “14 He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.  15 Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;  16 Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;”

Key point:  God’s judments, laws, regulations are already in operation in all of earth.    Regardless of our awareness and understanding of them, they ARE.  It is in our best interest to obey Him in studying His Word so that we can work within  the framework He has established.   He has commanded us to be ALWAYS mindful of theses things.

Ezekiel 3:1-3  (ESV)”   And he said to me, “Son of man, eat whatever you find here. Eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel.” 2 So I opened my mouth, and he gave me this scroll to eat. 3 And he said to me, “Son of man, feed your belly with this scroll that I give you and fill your stomach with it.” Then I ate it, and it was in my mouth as sweet as honey.”

Key point:  God has given us His Word.   We will only benefit from it if we “eat/read” it until we are truly filled with it.

Proverbs 1:2-4 “Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline,(1st) to help them understand the insights of the wise (2nd). Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined (3rd) and successful lives (4th),  to help them do what is right (5th), just, (6th) and fair (7th). These proverbs will give insight to the simple (8th),  knowledge(9th)  and discernment (10th) to the young.”

Key Point:  the book of Proverbs is a powerhouse and is on assignment to do at least 10 different things for us.   I do these often with my own children as they give insight to the simple and knowledge and discernment to the young (in  age and in their walk).

****Tuesday Sessions 3, week 4*****

Psalm 19:9-11 “The [reverent] fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even than much fine gold; they are sweeter also than honey and drippings from the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is Your servant warned (reminded, illuminated, and instructed); and in keeping them there is great reward.” [The Amplified]

Psalm 69:32-33 “The humble will see their God at work and be glad.  Let all who seek God’s help be encouraged. For the Lord hears the cries of the needy;   he does not despise his imprisoned people.”

1 Timothy 4:13-15 “Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.  Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you.  Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. “

2 Timothy 3:16-17  “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.  God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work..”

Romans 7:7-12 “Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said, “You must not covet.” But sin used this command to arouse all kinds of covetous desires within me! If there were no law, sin would not have that power.  At one time I lived without understanding the law. But when I learned the command not to covet, for instance, the power of sin came to life, and I died. So I discovered that the law’s commands, which were supposed to bring life, brought spiritual death instead. Sin took advantage of those commands and deceived me; it used the commands to kill me.  But still, the law itself is holy, and its commands are holy and right and good.”)

Ephesians 5:26-27 “For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault.”

Psalm 119:11 Context all of Psalm 119 “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

1 John 3:9 “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”

1 John 5:18 “We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.”

Nehemiah 8:1-17 New Living Translation (NLT) “… all the people assembled with a unified purpose at the square just inside the Water Gate. They asked Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had given for Israel to obey. 2 So on October 8[a] Ezra the priest brought the Book of the Law before the assembly, which included the men and women and all the children old enough to understand. 3 He faced the square just inside the Water Gate from early morning until noon and read aloud to everyone who could understand. All the people listened closely to the Book of the Law.  4 Ezra the scribe stood on a high wooden platform that had been made for the occasion. To his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah. To his left stood Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5 Ezra stood on the platform in full view of all the people. When they saw him open the book, they all rose to their feet.6 Then Ezra praised the Lord, the great God, and all the people chanted, “Amen! Amen!” as they lifted their hands. Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.  7 The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah—then instructed the people in the Law while everyone remained in their places. 8 They read from the Book of the Law of God and clearly explained the meaning of what was being read, helping the people understand each passage.  9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were interpreting for the people said to them, “Don’t mourn or weep on such a day as this! For today is a sacred day before the Lordyour God.” For the people had all been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.  10 And Nehemiah continued, “Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!”  11 And the Levites, too, quieted the people, telling them, “Hush! Don’t weep! For this is a sacred day.” 12 So the people went away to eat and drink at a festive meal, to share gifts of food, and to celebrate with great joy because they had heard God’s words and understood them.  13 On October 9[c] the family leaders of all the people, together with the priests and Levites, met with Ezra the scribe to go over the Law in greater detail. 14 As they studied the Law, they discovered that the Lordhad commanded through Moses that the Israelites should live in shelters during the festival to be held that month.[d] 15 He had said that a proclamation should be made throughout their towns and in Jerusalem, telling the people to go to the hills to get branches from olive, wild olive,[e] myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees. They were to use these branches to make shelters in which they would live during the festival, as prescribed in the Law.  16 So the people went out and cut branches and used them to build shelters on the roofs of their houses, in their courtyards, in the courtyards of God’s Temple, or in the squares just inside the Water Gate and the Ephraim Gate. 17 So everyone who had returned from captivity lived in these shelters during the festival, and they were all filled with great joy! The Israelites had not celebrated like this since the days of Joshua[f] son of Nun.”

Psalm 119:50 “This is my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life.”

Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”

Psalm 119:114 “You are my refuge and my shield; your word is my source of hope.”

Psalm 119:133 “Guide my steps by your word,  so I will not be overcome by evil.”

Romans 15:4 “Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.”

2 Peter 1:3-9  (KJV) “3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;  6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.”

2 Peter 1 :19-21 “Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place—until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts. Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding,  or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.”

Hebrews  4:12 “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. “

James 1:21 “So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for.” it has the power to save your souls

Psalm 33:4-6  (KJV) “4 For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth.5 He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.  6 By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

Psalm 107:17-20 “Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins.  They couldn’t stand the thought of food, and they were knocking on death’s door. “Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death.”

Genesis 1:1-31 – God spoke all of creation into being.

Psalm 33:4-7 “For the word of the Lord is right; and all His work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the loving-kindness of the Lord. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, and all their host by the breath of His mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea as in a bottle; He puts the deeps in storage places”

Jeremiah 1:11-19  (ESV) “11 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see an almond branch.” 12 Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.  13 The word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot, facing away from the north.”14 Then the Lord said to me, “Out of the north disaster shall be let loose upon all the inhabitants of the land. 15 For behold, I am calling all the tribes of the kingdoms of the north, declares the Lord, and they shall come, and every one shall set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls all around and against all the cities of Judah. 16 And I will declare my judgments against them, for all their evil in forsaking me. They have made offerings to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands. 17 But you, dress yourself for work; arise, and say to them everything that I command you. Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before them. 18 And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you.”

Jeremiah 15:19-21  (ESV) “19 Therefore thus says the Lord: “If you return, I will restore you,  and you shall stand before me.  If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless,   you shall be as my mouth.  They shall turn to you,  but you shall not turn to them.  20 And I will make you to this people  a fortified wall of bronze;  they will fight against you,   but they shall not prevail over you,  for I am with you to save you and deliver you,  declares the Lord.  21 I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked,  and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.”

Psalm 78:1-10  (KJV)  “78 Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.  2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:  3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.  4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.  5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:  6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:  7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:  8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.”

Luke 11:27-28  “27 As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Deuteronomy 12:28  (KJV)  “28 Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of the Lord thy God.”

15.______________________________________________________________________

Deuteronomy 30:14  But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your mind and in your heart, so that you can do it.” [the Amplified]

Isaiah 28:9-20 “Who does the Lord think we are?” they ask. “Why does he speak to us like this? Are we little children, just recently weaned? He tells us everything over and over— one line at a time, one line at a time, a little here, and a little there!”  So now God will have to speak to his people through foreign oppressors who speak a strange language! God has told his people, “Here is a place of rest; let the weary rest here. This is a place of quiet rest.” But they would not listen. So the Lord will spell out his message for them again, one line at a time, one line at a time, a little here, and a little there, so that they will stumble and fall.  They will be injured, trapped, and captured.  Therefore, listen to this message from the Lord, you scoffing rulers in Jerusalem. You boast, “We have struck a bargain to cheat death and have made a deal to dodge the grave. The coming destruction can never touch us, for we have built a strong refuge made of lies and deception.”  Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone.   It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken. I will test you with the measuring line of justice and the plumb line of righteousness.  Since your refuge is made of lies, a hailstorm will knock it down. Since it is made of deception, a flood will sweep it away. I will cancel the bargain you made to cheat death, and I will overturn your deal to dodge the grave. When the terrible enemy sweeps through, you will be trampled into the ground Again and again that flood will come, morning after morning, day and night, until you are carried away.”

Matthew 11:25 “At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike.  Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way!”

Proverbs 8:9-10 “My words are plain to anyone with understanding,  clear to those with knowledge. Choose my instruction rather than silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold.”

Psalm 119:130 “The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand.”

2 Corinthians 1:13-14 ”Our letters have been straightforward, and there is nothing written between the lines and nothing you can’t understand. I hope someday you will fully understand us, 14 even if you don’t understand us now. Then on the day when the Lord Jesus returns, you will be proud of us in the same way we are proud of you.”

Psalm 138:2  (KJV) “2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.”

Psalm 119:89  “Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.”

1 John 4:1 “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2 Corinthians 11:4  “For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.”

1 Corinthians 3:9-11  (KJV) “9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.  10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.  11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Matthew 7:24  (KJV) 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:”

POTENTIAL BLOCKS

Deuteronomy 4:1-2 “And now, Israel, listen carefully to these decrees and regulations that I am about to teach you. Obey them so that you may live, so you may enter and occupy the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.  Do not add to or subtract from these commands I am giving you. Just obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you.”

Galatians 1:7 “I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Christ. You are following a different way that pretends to be the Good News but is not the Good News at all. You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth concerning Christ.”

Revelation 22:17-19  “I [personally solemnly] warn everyone who listens to the statements of the prophecy [the predictions and the consolations and admonitions pertaining to them] in this book: If anyone shall add anything to them, God will add and lay upon him the plagues (the afflictions and the calamities) that are recorded and described in this book. And if anyone cancels or takes away from the statements of the book of this prophecy [these predictions relating to Christ’s kingdom and its speedy triumph, together with the consolations and admonitions or warnings pertaining to them], God will cancel and take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the city of holiness (purity and hallowedness), which are described and promised in this book.”[the Amplified Bible]

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.  And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.  And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.  Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.  Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

Deuteronomy 29:29 “The Lord our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions.”

The Amplified Bible“Therefore My people go into captivity [to their enemies] without knowing it and because they have no knowledge [of God]. And their honorable men [their glory] are famished, and their common people are parched with thirst.     Therefore Sheol (the unseen state, the realm of the dead) has enlarged its appetite and opened its mouth without measure; and [Jerusalem’s] nobility and her multitude and her pomp and tumult and [the drunken reveler] who exults in her descend into it.”

Acts 20:25-27  (KJV) “25 And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.  26 Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.  27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

Jeremiah 5:12-14  (ESV) “12 They have spoken falsely of the Lord and have said, ‘He will do nothing; no disaster will come upon us,  nor shall we see sword or famine.  13 The prophets will become wind;   the word is not in them.  Thus shall it be done to them!’”  The Lord Proclaims Judgment 14 Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts:  “Because you have spoken this word, behold, I am making my words in your mouth a fire,     and this people wood, and the fire shall consume them.”

Jeremiah 6:10 “To whom can I give warning? Who will listen when I speak? Their ears are closed, and they cannot hear. They scorn the word of the Lord.  They don’t want to listen at all.”

John 8:47 (KJV)“He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.”

John 9:39-41 “Jesus then said, “I came into the world to bring everything into the clear light of day, making all the distinctions clear, so that those who have never seen will see, and those who have made a great pretense of seeing will be exposed as blind.”   Some Pharisees overheard him and said, “Does that mean you’re calling us blind?” Jesus said, “If you were really blind, you would be blameless, but since you claim to see everything so well, you’re accountable for every fault and failure.”  (the Message)

Matthew 13:8-16  [The Amplified Bible] “He who has ears [to hear], let him be listening and let him consider and perceive and comprehend by hearing.     Then the disciples came to Him and said, Why do You speak to them in parables?  And He replied to them, To you it has been given to know the secrets and mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.    For whoever has [spiritual knowledge], to him will more be given and he will be furnished richly so that he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is the reason that I speak to them in parables: because having the power of seeing, they do not see; and having the power of hearing, they do not hear, nor do they grasp and understand. In them indeed is the process of fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah, which says:

‘You shall indeed hear and hear but never grasp and understand; and you shall indeed look and look but never see and perceive. For this nation’s heart has grown gross (fat and dull), and their ears heavy and difficult of hearing, and their eyes they have tightly closed, lest they see and perceive with their eyes, and hear and comprehend the sense with their ears, and grasp and understand with their heart, and turn and I should heal them.’ But blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are your eyes because they do see, and your ears because they do hear.  Truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous men [men who were upright and in right standing with God] yearned to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

Proverbs 19:27″ If you stop listening to instruction, my child, you will turn your back on knowledge”

Proverbs 4:5-6 “Get wisdom; develop good judgment.  Don’t forget my words or turn away from them. Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you.  Love her, and she will guard you.”

Proverbs 28:9 NLT “God detests the prayers of a person who ignores the law.”

KJV  “He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.”

Isaiah 5:24  (NLT) “24 Therefore, just as fire licks up stubble and dry grass shrivels in the flame, so their roots will rot and their flowers wither.  For they have rejected the law of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies;  they have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.”

Jeremiah 8:9  (ESV) “The wise men shall be put to shame;  they shall be dismayed and taken;  behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord, so what wisdom is in them?”

Jeremiah 11:3-8  (ESV) “3 You shall say to them, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Cursed be the man who does not hear the words of this covenant 4 that I commanded your fathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Listen to my voice, and do all that I command you. So shall you be my people, and I will be your God, 5 that I may confirm the oath that I swore to your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as at this day.” Then I answered, “So be it, Lord.”   6 And the Lord said to me, “Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: Hear the words of this covenant and do them. 7 For I solemnly warned your fathers when I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, warning them persistently, even to this day, saying, Obey my voice. 8 Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but everyone walked in the stubbornness of his evil heart. Therefore I brought upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not.”

Jeremiah 23:36 “ Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. 17 They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, ‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No disaster shall come upon you.’”

Jeremiah 4:3 “This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and Jerusalem:   “Plow up the hard ground of your hearts! Do not waste your good seed among thorns.”

Jerimiah 6:10-11 “10 To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the Lord is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.  11 Therefore I am full of the fury of the Lord; I am weary with holding in: I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days.”

Luke 8:4-15 “One day Jesus told a story in the form of a parable to a large crowd that had gathered from many towns to hear him: “A farmer went out to plant his seed. As he scattered it across his field, some seed fell on a footpath, where it was stepped on, and the birds ate it. Other seed fell among rocks. It began to grow, but the plant soon wilted and died for lack of moisture. Other seed fell among thorns that grew up with it and choked out the tender plants.  Still other seed fell on fertile soil. This seed grew and produced a crop that was a hundred times as much as had been planted!” When he had said this, he called out, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”  His disciples asked him what this parable meant.  He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables to teach the others so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled:   ‘When they look, they won’t really see. When they hear, they won’t understand.’ “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is God’s word. The seeds that fell on the footpath represent those who hear the message, only to have the devil come and take it away from their hearts and prevent them from believing and being saved.  The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation. The seeds that fell among the thorns represent those who hear the message, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life. And so they never grow into maturity.  And the seeds that fell on the good soil represent honest, good-hearted people who hear God’s word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest.”

Matthew 15:1-9 “Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked him, “Why do your disciples disobey our age-old tradition?  For they ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat.”  Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God? For instance, God says, ‘Honour your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’  But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you.  For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’  In this way, you say they don’t need to honour their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.  You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’

Mark 7:10-13  (KJV)  “10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:  11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.  12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;  13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.”

1 Corinthians 1:15-24  (KJV) “15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. 20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?  21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.  22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:  23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;  24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.”

Mark 6:4-6  (KJV) “4 But Jesus, said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.  5 And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.  6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.”

Romans 4:19-21  CONTEXT (KJV) “19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb:

20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.”

1 Samuel 9:27  (ESV) “27 As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to pass on before us, and when he has passed on, stop here yourself for a while, that I may make known to you the word of God.”

Luke 14:12-24  (ESV)  “12 He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. 13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.  15 When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” 16 But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. 17 And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ 18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’ 19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’ 20 And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ 21 So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ 22 And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ 23 And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’”

Luke 10:38-42  (NKJV) “38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”  41 And [b]Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

James 1:11  (ESV) “11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.”

Matthew 13:15-23  (ESV) “15 For this people’s heart has grown dull,  and with their ears they can barely hear,  and their eyes they have closed,  lest they should see with their eyes     and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.’  16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.17 For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.18 “Hear then the parable of the sower: 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. 20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.[a]22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

Proverbs 23:11-13  (NLT) “11 For their Redeemer is strong;  he himself will bring their charges against you. 12 Commit yourself to instruction;    listen carefully to words of knowledge. 13 Don’t fail to discipline your children.    The rod of punishment won’t kill them.”

Paul’s Thorn: Further considerations

Wow!  I am so blessed by our times together.    With our conversation from last evening settling in, I have some new things to ponder and share.

Let’s look at this through an even broader lens of scriptural truth.

What can we learn from Paul’s Thorn in the Flesh?

Who did the thorn come from?  Satan.  The thorn was a messenger from Satan.  No where in the verse say that God sent the messenger.

Regardless of what Paul’s thorn was, was there something off in Paul’s way of thinking in respect to what he shares in this passage?

In Deuteronomy 30, God lists the blessings and curses that come from living either according to obedience/ godliness or from disobedience/rebellion and clearly lists health as a blessing that comes from obedience and disease and sickness as a curse coming out of rebellion.

Proverbs tells us that no curse can come into our lives without a cause.

Proverbs 26:2 “Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest.”

Satan is the accuser of brethren (Revelation 12:10) and is as a roaring lion seeking out those he has legal right to devour.  He is limited, he cannot bring on someone a curse if they are living in godliness. (see Job verse below).  We can see that God places a hedge around those who live righteously that Satan cannot cross.

1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” who is as a wandering lion looking for whom he can devour”

Job 1:6-12 “6 One day the angels[a] came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b] also came with them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”  Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”  8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”  9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”  12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”  Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

The question is, what was the open door that gave Satan permission to send a messenger to harrass and buffet Paul with.    From Job we can learn at least  two things.

1st.  Satan has permission to tempt the godly for certain windows of time.   How often, when and for how long these can happen in a believers life, are questions that scripture does not clearly answer.   But we see here that Satan had to get specific permission to do anything at all to Job BECAUSE of Job’s right standing with God.     If a man is living in righteousness, then and only then does Satan need express permission to come at a man.  That said, each one of us determines in at least some measure which windows and doors to our lives we leave open to the Enemy  by how we choose to live.    Scripture plainly warns us that sinning can not abiding in Christ can give Satan a foothold in our lives.

Here is a New Testament example to illustrate the point.   We see this firmly echoed in James.   God clearly commands us to submit to HIM and to resist the devil and to purge our double mindedness.

Ephesians 4:26-28 New International Version (NIV)  26 “In your anger do not sin”[a]: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.”

James 4:6-8 New International Version (NIV)  But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:  “God opposes the proud  but shows favor to the humble.”[a]  Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

So what foothold had Paul given to Satan to allow Him in?  OR was he simply going though a testing time like Job did, like Peter, like Adam and Eve in the garden, like Jesus Himself int he wilderness?  Scripture tells us that windows of testing are part of the righteous man’s experience but that they were a limited time opportunity for Satan only. Job went on to a life of double blessing. Luke 4 is an excellent example, Satan had to wait for his next opportunity, he did not have unlimited access to Jesus.

Luke 22:31-32 New International Version (NIV)  31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

Luke 4:13 “13 When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came.”

2nd point.   That God was not the one tempting or testing Job.  Satan asked permission and once he had obtained broad permission (note that God only gave him general instructions and prohibitions, he did not tell him or approve a specific plan of action to implement).  From that point on, Satan authored all that came against Job but was limited by the parameters God imposed on him that he CANNOT cross.  Now Job, mistakenly, creditted God with being the author of his calaminity.  But scripture records the truth.  Satan was the author but clearly Job got somethings very wrong here.  God was always on his side. God was always for him.

Job 17:6 ““God has made a mockery of me among the people;  they spit in my face.”

Job 18 ” But it is God who has wronged me,  capturing me in his net.[a]  “I cry out, ‘Help!’ but no one answers me.      I protest, but there is no justice.   God has blocked my way so I cannot move.    He has plunged my path into darkness.  He has stripped me of my honor     and removed the crown from my head. 10 He has demolished me on every side, and I am finished.    He has uprooted my hope like a fallen tree.  11 His fury burns against me;      he counts me as an enemy.  12 His troops advance.      They build up roads to attack me.      They camp all around my tent.

Paul, at very least, had some error in his thinking at the time he wrote this passage.     He believed that God needed a messenger of Satan to help him overcome the sin of pride.

Was that God’s best way of teaching a man?  No, absolutely not.   Scripture tells us that God’s best way to be strengthened against sin is by being empowered by the Holy Spirit to have the desire and ability to do what pleases God and by obedience and submission to His Word.

Philippians 2:13 New Living Translation (NLT)13 For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

Psalm 119:11 New Living Translation (NLT) 11 I have hidden your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.

2 Timothy 3:16 King James Version (KJV) 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Proverbs 14:3 New Living Translation (NLT)A fool’s proud talk becomes a rod that beats him,  but the words of the wise keep them safe.

Proverbs 10:13King James Version (KJV)13 In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

Paul had been commissioned, just like Adam, to take dominion over everything that crawls upon the earth and per Luke 10:19, he had authority over all the power of the enemy.  Just as we are, Paul had been delivered from the power of darkness and yet in these verses we see him empowering and inviting the enemy’s thorn over the provision and promise of God to accomplish this work in Him via instruction and His Word at work in Paul.

Colossians 1:12-13King James Version (KJV)  12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:  13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

Proverbs 6:2 King James Version (KJV) 2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

When considered in this light, God’s answer to Paul makes perfect sense.  Paul was sincerely concerned/fearful that he was in or would fall into the sin of pride.   Is it possible God was simply saying  ” Paul, my grace (the power of the Holy Spirit within you, empowering you to live and walk out all aspects of kingdom living) is sufficient for you to overcome this.   You don’t need that thorn to resist pride.  All you need is me.”     These are of course my thoughts alone, and not scripture, although I think the original language does support his view.    There will be no Satan in heaven sending us messengers to prevent us from sinning.  Did Paul really need that thorn in his flesh to overcome sin?   What does scripture say?  I believe what Paul needed, just like the rest of us,  was more Jesus.   Jesus THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE.

Remember grace means  = “of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues” from the Strong’s Concordance

1 Corinthians 8:1 ESV “Now concerning[a] food offered to idols: we know that “all of us possess knowledge.” This “knowledge” puffs up, but love builds up.. “

Iron sharpening iron is just such a wonderful thing.   Thanks to you all, I have eyes to see things I missed before.    For me, it now jumps out that Paul was stuck in some wrong thinking at very least when he wrote this passage.  Paul concluded he needed a thorn, so he got a thorn.   In an interesting twist, Paul himself shows he knew the answer even before he wrote this letter.    He tells us that LOVE is really the antidote necessary to build and strengthen the church.   This is echoed in the verse that perfect love casts out all fear and that fear comes with torment.  We are made perfect in love not ideally via the demonic harrassment.

1 John 4:18 King James Version (KJV)  18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Therefore we must lived mindfully not to follow Paul’s example in this one case.   In believing he needed this thorn, he was in fact empowering it to remain as a life long pain in his flesh or possibly in his thinking.

Of course there are many theories to consider…   another thought was that  the thorn may have simply been some other undisclosed torment such as remorse and regret and condemnation for the part he played in the torture and murder of so many believers pre-conversion,

If Paul’s thorn was a demonic oppression, a physical ailment, or a mental stronghold that tormented him, did he have in Christ the answer to be delivered and set free?  I believe the answer is yes, truly God’s grace was sufficient for him to overcome all these things.

The only other option that I can see is what I mentioned in the first post.  That Paul suffered immensely and continually from being exposed to the elements, from lack, from all the things he lists in 2 Corinthians immediately before he talks about this thorn and immediately after he talks about His Thorn.   In fact if we read it straight through from 2 Corinthians 11:16  to 2 Corinthians 12:11, we will see that Paul very much is speaking (I personally believe) consistently about the hardships and persecutions he faced due to his lifestyle as an apostle.  In remembering that the verse markings were added later, you see when Paul begin to speak on this topic.  He begins by introducing this new topic in 2 Corinthians  11:6 and then sums up his thought 2 Corinthians 12:10.    If we define Paul’s thorn as persecution and hardships, then Paul really stays right on topic and is consistent throughout this part of his letter.   If anything else, he is diverging momentarily to speak about his thorn (unrelated to everything he has shared before and after, but just kind of randomnly tucked).    As we do in a letter, he then shifts to another topic.  You will note that sickness is not listed among the dangers Paul faced, nor is it listed among the things he suffered from listed in his summary in verse 10 at the end there.

Let us continually rejoice, as Paul did

James 1:2-8 New International Version (NIV)Trials and Temptations    “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Romans 5:1-10 English Standard Version (ESV)  “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith[b] into this grace in which we stand, and we[c] rejoice[d] in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.”

From the Stong’s Concordance:

suffering = θλῖψις thlîpsis, thlip’-sis; from G2346; pressure (literally or figuratively):—afflicted(-tion), anguish, burdened, persecution, tribulation, trouble.

Of note, sickness and disease are not included in the meaning of this particular word.

So we can see it scripture plainly tells us through persecutions and the types of troubles Paul lists throughout the passage in question, God does not need sickness and disease to grow these fruit in us.   We have got trouble plenty enough with all the others listed to do the job.   God works all these wonderful things into us.  Truly God’s grace in us empowers us to grow and flourish in the presence of harsh and unrelenting situations and pressures, instead of being crushed and destroyed.  Praise the Lord.  Truly He is Faithful.

My personal big question is no longer what was Paul’s thorn.   At best we are speculating to come up with an answer to that particular question.

It think the bigger question is why did Paul accept this thorn.   What about you, what do you see?

Something to keep in mind always.    Revelation of the truth often precedes the ability to lie according to that revelation by a significant measure of time.  Perhaps Paul really was just still in process at this time in his walk in this area.   Scripture never claims that Paul or the disciples practiced what they preached perfectly.   So we keep Jesus and and Jesus alone as our role model.  Jesus never needed a thorn in his flesh to keep him from getting puffed up with pride and His revelation far exceeded Paul’s.
