Understanding God’s Will: Topic 11

Overview :   To understand what God wants for us according to scripture.

Simple Prayer

Lord, Your Word indicates that you want all men to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth.   Open our eyes, hearts and ears to see, receive and hear the truth you want to teach each one of us today.  In Jesus name. [Proverbs 20:12]

We seem to be really great at accepting that it is God’s will for all men to be saved and yet there is this pervasive belief that it is only sometimes God’s will to heal.

Q1- Where does this belief come from?

Q-2- Is this scriptural or is this a tradition of men?

Leaving this question unanswered leaves the door wide open for a sea of doubt to sweep over us when we are the ones suffering from illness, disease or disability.

As I mentioned last week, we seem to get that when a preacher preaches on salvation, we don’t look to the results, the number of people converted that day to judge whether or not the message was successful.  If only 1 person in 100 is saved, we can rejoice, knowing that God is working on the other 99.

Why don’t we do this with healing?

Faith comes from hearing the good news..

Proverbs 4:13 “Take hold of my instructions; don’t let them go.  Guard them, for they are the key to life.”

1 Timothy 2:3-7 “…God our Saviour, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men – the testimony given in its proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle – I am telling the truth, I am not lying – and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.”

I will likely refer back to this scripture down the road.

  1. One mediator – general tendency to want to add more mediators between us and Christ (eg Pastor, elder, Christian of mature faith we look up to)  which is valid in some ways etc…

Concordance – saved = sozo = made wholeto save, keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction

a) one (from injury or peril)

1) to save a suffering one (from perishing), i.e. one suffering from disease, to make well, heal, restore to health

1) to preserve one who is in danger of destruction, to save or rescue

b) to save in the technical biblical sense

1) negatively

a) to deliver from the penalties of the Messianic judgment

) to save from the evils which obstruct the reception of the Messianic deliverance

  1.

Romans 10:13 “For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

John 6:29 “Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”

The Amplified 29Jesus replied, This is the work (service) that God asks of you: that you believe in the One Whom He has sent [that you cleave to, trust, rely on, and have faith in His Messenger].Belief is a choice / faith is a fruit, gift from God

Romans 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.”

Mark 9:24 “The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”

Matthew 22:38-40 “Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’This is the first and greatest commandment.  A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

1 Peter 1:17 “And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites.   He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time as “foreigners in the land.”

John 10:10 “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” KJV

Psalm 103:1-3 “Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.  Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me.   He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases.”

Matthew 4:23-24 “Jesus traveled throughout the region of Galilee, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness.  News about him spread as far as Syria, and people soon began bringing to him all who were sick. And whatever their sickness or disease, or if they were demon possessed or epileptic or paralyzed—he healed them all.”

Colossians 1:15 “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.  He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation”

Hebrews 1:2-3 [New Centure Version]“But now in these last days God has spoken to us through his Son. God has chosen his Son to own all things, and through him he made the world.  The Son reflects the glory of God and shows exactly what God is like. He holds everything together with his powerful word. When the Son made people clean from their sins, he sat down at the right side of God, the Great One in heaven.”

John 6:38 “For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will.”

John 14:9-11 “Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you?  Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me.  Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do.”

John 5:19-30  “So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.  For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished.  For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants.  In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge,  so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.  “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.   “And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live.  The Father has life in himself, and he has granted that same life-giving power to his Son. And he has given him authority to judge everyone because he is the Son of Man]  Don’t be so surprised! Indeed, the time is coming when all the dead in their graves will hear the voice of God’s Son,  and they will rise again. Those who have done good will rise to experience eternal life, and those who have continued in evil will rise to experience judgment.  I can do nothing on my own. I judge as God tells me. Therefore, my judgment is just, because I carry out the will of the one who sent me, not my own will. “

Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

Hebrews 1:10-12 “He also says to the Son, “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands. They will perish, but you remain forever. They will wear out like old clothing. You will fold them up like a cloak and discard them like old clothing. But you are always the same; you will live forever.”

4. Jesus Healed at Times out of Pure Compassion/GraceMercy/.

Luke 7:13-15  “When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said.  Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.”  Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother. Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited his people today.”  And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside.”

Luke 14:1-5 “One Sabbath day Jesus went to eat dinner in the home of a leader of the Pharisees, and the people were watching him closely.  There was a man there whose arms and legs were swollen. Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in religious law, “Is it permitted in the law to heal people on the Sabbath day, or not?”  When they refused to answer, Jesus touched the sick man and healed him and sent him away.  Then he turned to them and said, “Which of you doesn’t work on the Sabbath? If your son or your cow falls into a pit, don’t you rush to get him out?”

Matthew 14:14 “Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.”

Mark 1:40-41 “A man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus, begging to be healed. “If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean,” he said.  Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!

Luke 13:11-16 “He saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight.  When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!”  Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God!  But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.”  But the Lord replied, “You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water?  This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?”

Proverbs 3:28 “Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them.   If you can help your neighbour now, don’t say,“Come back tomorrow, and then I’ll help you.”.”

This says if it is within your power, not if you are in the mood.

John 5:5-14 “One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years.  When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?”  “I can’t, sir,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.”  Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!” Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking!”

John 9:1-9 (see the context John 9:1-34)“As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. “Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?”  “It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.  We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work.  But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.”   Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes.  He told him, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing!”

John 9:30-34“Why, that’s very strange!” the man replied. “He healed my eyes, and yet you don’t know where he comes from?  We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.  Ever since the world began, no one has been able to open the eyes of someone born blind.  If this man were not from God, he couldn’t have done it.”  “You were born a total sinner!” they answered. “Are you trying to teach us?” And they threw him out of the synagogue.”

Luke:4:16-18 “When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.  The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:  The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”

Hebrews 7:25  “Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.”

Romans 9:15  (see context Romans 9:15-24)“For God said to Moses,   “I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.”

Isaiah 55:8-9“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

One Biblical Reason Why Some Godly People Die Young

Isaiah 57:1-2  “Good people pass away; the godly often die before their time. But no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting them from the evil to come.  For those who follow godly paths will rest in peace when they die.”
