Leviticus 16:29 “29 And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:” KJV
Leviticus 23:27 King James Version “27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.”
This is great and thorough teaching and so rich with things to explore and ponder. I too had no idea of the connection with Purim either but it all makes sense in the light of what Yeshua has done for us… the great reversing of decrees of death upon us and the curse and intentions of Satan towards Yeshua and us …coming back upon his own head sealing his judgement. God is so amazing in the way He does things. The phrase “affliction of our souls “ helps me understand the purpose and power of fasting in that we have a WILL that can decide which will be in charge … our soul flesh and demands of the body or our spirits set on Him. Our soul flesh can be on ‘auto-pilot’ and take us where we don’t want to go so purposing to fast and go into a place of no usual mundane activity of accomplishing things.. strengthens our spirit despite the whimpering complaints of our bodies and souls while we determine to give them little or no attention.
It never ceases to amaze me how hard it is to “cease from my works”. It is actually far harder for me to take a whole day off working than to work all day. In our family I see the temptation on both ends of the spectrum. In children, the ability to cease from works seems to flow readily…..
I had no idea that this holiday was linked to Purim… but I absolutely can see that this is a magnificent day to celebrate the atonement that Christ purchased for us to have. Reading through the intense ritual associated with this day. The numbers of ritualistic steps that the high priest had to take to enter into God’s presence are mind blowing in juxtaposition with the simplicity of being able to “boldly go before the throne”.

14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need”

Leviticus 16 and 18, Numbers 29, Isaiah 57 and 58, the book of Jonah and Micah 7:18–20 ESV “God’s Steadfast Love and Compassion 18 Who is a God like you, npardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love. 19 He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all ou6 sins into the depths of the sea. 20 You will show faithfulness to Jacob and steadfast love to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from the days of old.”
Truly a day to celebrate our Yeshua, our High Priest, Precious Lamb of God, and the extraordinary and awesome gift of redemption in Christ.
