  1. Last day of Passover today I think… We will continue where we left off. Exodus 12 KJV 21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover.

22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.

23 For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.

24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.

25 And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the Lord will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service.

26 And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service?

27 That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.

28 And the children of Israel went away, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.

29 And it came to pass, that at midnight the Lord smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.

30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

    • Good morning all. Lovely sunshine, but cold!!!
I love how God tells the Israelites to teach their children about this night. When we were in Israel in 1998 we saw that all the time, especially on Shabbat night. They take the teaching of God’s ways to the children very seriously.

      • Also interesting in vs28 then the Israelites went and did(as they had been told0: just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. This is one of the times that they did not argue or complain to Moses and Aaron, but did what they were told and reaped the benefits of it. Somehow the impact and seriousness of it must have gotten through to them.

        • Perhaps this is what is happening today. God is calling us to get very serious about Him and about our walk with Him. Lukewarm is a not favourable and ensures whoever this as a lukewarm believer will be spit out and rejected on the judgement day. Perhaps all that we are seeing right now is really just a measure of this same mercy and grace and love and forbearance in action. A cry from the Father saying… “turn to me so I can heal you and your land”

2 Chronicles 7:14 King James Version (KJV)
14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Acts 28:26-28 New Living Translation (NLT)
26 ‘Go and say to this people:
When you hear what I say,
          you will not understand.
When you see what I do,
          you will not comprehend.
27 For the hearts of these people are hardened,
          and their ears cannot hear,
and they have closed their eyes—
          so their eyes cannot see,
          and their ears cannot hear,
          and their hearts cannot understand,
and they cannot turn to me
          and let me heal them.’

28 So I want you to know that this salvation from God has also been offered to the Gentiles, and they will accept it.”

          • Yes…I sense this too. I feel we are seeing more the chastening side of Yahweh ,our ‘Abba’ and He’s serious about finding the ‘mature sons of God.KC

    • We are coming to the end of the first portion of the Exodus… and humanly speaking, if I were to impose my emotions on God…. I would be utterly discouraged and exasperated with both Pharoah and the people… The amount of effort and persistence it took AND sign and wonders to change the course of all the people involved was just so so so immense. This helps me to better understand the perspective we potentially need to adopt in order to truly pray for people to be “saved”. In my own understanding, I have come to see this as the moment we accept and believe in God enough to leave our old life behind and choose to submit to the Lord as God, Creator of all and worthy of serving with our whole selves.

      • Yes I often say that it’s a good thing that I am not God, because I would have long ago destroyed everything and maybe tried again. Good thing that I am not God. LOL I am always amazed at His long suffering and patience and faithfulness. It so strikes me how much He must love us, that He puts up with us and our antics. Maybe that ‘s why He made us parents, so we could get a small clue into what He must feel at times. Both the frustration and the delight and unbelievable love for our children.
        Wendy

        • I have had this thought often about being involved in the birthing and raising of children. There is something about the struggles and investment we put into our children that knits our hearts and caring to them in a very powerful way. I think we catch glimpses of the divine heart and love in these things for sure

    • We had our “virtual” prayer meeting last night and Randy mentioned a video called “The Coming Perfect Storm” by John Paul Jackson. It is interesting to consider his message in light of the Exodus passages we have been working through. Over and over again he says that when God people get sincere and take a posture of submission and repentance, the darkness will cease and the light will flood in. This is the theme I see in the next part of the Exodus story. It motivates me to aim to walk in submission and repentance all the time.

      • Amen!!! Something that is reviled and feared by most of our society and also in some Christian circles. Not so much the repentance in Christian circles, but certainly submission.

    • Good morning everyone! Once again just have to express thanks for the sunshine! This is what stood out for m in this passage
‘from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.’ This final plague death was the great leveler.. It did not recognize rank or position. Where Pharoah may have gotten a degree of relief from the other plagues because of his stored up wealth, protective places in the palace perhaps ,an advantage over the people he was over…there was no relief from this one. Also I too lisa thought that all the cattle and livestock were eliminated in another plague .I wonder how long this whole process of Moses and Pharoah going back and forth tool?KC

    • I cannot even imagine vs 30… not one house in Egypt without a loved one lost. Still wrestling with the livestock issue… but of course, there are many easy answers possible… that Pharoah would have taken livestock from the Israelites is not the least of these… or that they would have quickly sought out more from neighbouring properties… or that those who were not in the fields were not subjected to the other 2 plagues…

  2. Next passage Exodus 12 KJV ” 31 And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the Lord, as ye have said.

32 Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also.

33 And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men.

34 And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.

35 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment:

36 And the Lord gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.

37 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.

38 And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.

39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.

40 Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years.

41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt.

    • That’s a lot of people, and it does not even include the women and children. I wonder how long it took them to totally get out of Egypt and the sight of all the Egyptians. Pharaoh certainly wanted them gone quickly now.
      Wendy

    • So interesting that they came in with such favour because of Joseph and were able to leave “plundering” the Egyptians because of Moses. I thin kit is easy for us to excuse ourselves from the fray as even Moses seemingly attempted to do when asked to do something he perceived as bigger than himself. Again, I am personally challenged to stop limiting God in my own life and to stop relying on my own personal assessment of my strength and weaknesses. No man can accomplish what these men did without His specific leading and provision. There is a great place of rest in this. First and foremost, hearing Him clearly proceeds all of these amazing feats and miraculous events. So learning to hear HIm that precisely becomes a central focus.

      • Yes hearing Him is key. I wonder how hard it was for Moses to hear God amidst all the clamour and complaining of the people?

      • Amp Ex 15:26. :saying, “If you will diligently listen and pay attention to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and listen to His commandments, and keep [foremost in your thoughts and actively obey] all His precepts and statutes, then I will not put on you any of the diseases which I have put on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.”

  3. Next passage Exodus 13 World English Bible (WEB)
13 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Sanctify to me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of animal. It is mine.”

3 Moses said to the people, “Remember this day, in which you came out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand Yahweh brought you out from this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten. 4 Today you go out in the month Abib. 5 It shall be, when Yahweh brings you into the land of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which he swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall keep this service in this month. 6 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to Yahweh. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten throughout the seven days; and no leavened bread shall be seen with you. No yeast shall be seen with you, within all your borders. 8 You shall tell your son in that day, saying, ‘It is because of that which Yahweh did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 It shall be for a sign to you on your hand, and for a memorial between your eyes, that Yahweh’s law may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand Yahweh has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You shall therefore keep this ordinance in its season from year to year.

11 “It shall be, when Yahweh brings you into the land of the Canaanite, as he swore to you and to your fathers, and will give it you, 12 that you shall set apart to Yahweh all that opens the womb, and every firstborn that comes from an animal which you have. The males shall be Yahweh’s. 13 Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and you shall redeem all the firstborn of man among your sons. 14 It shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ that you shall tell him, ‘By strength of hand Yahweh brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage. 15 When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, Yahweh killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of livestock. Therefore I sacrifice to Yahweh all that opens the womb, being males; but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 It shall be for a sign on your hand, and for symbols between your eyes; for by strength of hand Yahweh brought us out of Egypt.”

    • Any thoughts on verse 13 “Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb and if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck”
Does this have something to do with the stubbornness of Pharoah mentioned in verse 15? I’m not sure why thy were given these instructions.KC

      • Amp 13 Every firstborn of a [b]donkey you shall redeem by [substituting] a lamb [as a sacrifice for it], but if you do not [wish to] redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and every firstborn among your sons you shall redeem [that is, “buy back” from God with a suitable sacrifice].

Maybe this version helps to understand.

  4. Exodus 13 WEB “17 When Pharaoh had let the people go, God didn’t lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and they return to Egypt”; 18 but God led the people around by the way of the wilderness by the Red Sea; and the children of Israel went up armed out of the land of Egypt. 19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the children of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones away from here with you.” 20 They took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness. 21 Yahweh went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on their way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, that they might go by day and by night: 22 the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, didn’t depart from before the people.”

    • for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and they return to Egypt”;
This comforts me in knowing God knows our tendency to fickleness ,our weakness and giveness to Fear, our immaturity .God deals with us with such great long suffering according to where we are ‘at’ He does suffer ‘fools’ …for a while .In the beginning of their relating to Him in the wilderness he relates to them like they are just toddlers…
      KC

    • I find it amazing that God specifically considered their present ability and steered them around the Philistines to make sure they wouldn’t turn back to Egypt. Quite somethings that taking them through the Red Sea was the path that remained and that they could handle in their present state… truly God never leads us to a place that we cannot walk through.

      • 21 Yahweh went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on their way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, that they might go by day and by night:

Also practical, so they travel day and night, covering a lot of ground.
        Rob

    • Vs 22 amplified He did not withdraw the pillars of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night, from going before the people. His presence was continually before them and He did not withdraw it, so amazing.!!!!! ABBA Father let me see that clearly.

  5. a little detour… Philippians 4 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
4 So then, my brothers, you are dearly loved and longed for—my joy and crown. In this manner stand firm in the Lord, dear friends. 2 I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to agree in the Lord. 3 Yes, I also ask you, true partner, to help these women who have contended for the gospel at my side, along with Clement and the rest of my coworkers whose names are in the book of life. 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your graciousness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6 Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise—dwell on these things. 9 Do what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

10 I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that once again you renewed your care for me. You were, in fact, concerned about me but lacked the opportunity to show it. 11 I don’t say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. 12 I know both how to have a little, and I know how to have a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. 13 I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me. 14 Still, you did well by sharing with me in my hardship.

    • 8 Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise—dwell on these things.

I have always Loved this verse.
      Rob

      • It is really very clear. How much of what we do ought to be disqualified by this one precept. Anytime I catch myself thinking some “cat”ty thought or judgemental thought, it is so helpful to track it back and figure out what I let into my “gates” (usually visually or via hearing) that allowed or encouraged that thought in my head. Screens (media especially the news) are some of the worst offenders in my life.

    • v9. To me this communicates intentionally “rehearsing”/ practicing with actual concrete behaviours and activities. I believe we are continually reminded to put more than words to our faith but to have actions that are consistent with all that He calls us to do. I really appreciate Todd White in this area. He camps in one passage until God has changed him into the likeness of the man pictured there. This is an incredibly powerful approach the Word and letting Him transform utterly via His truth, power and love.

    • I LOVE this detour! I travel to these scriptures over and over. Especially when I find myself ‘disturbed’ by the influx of news in seeking to be ‘informed. So much here about how to take every thought captive, what to focus on, how to respond ,what to do and what not to do. A lot of very reassuring practical things here! KC

    • “don’t worry about anything instead pray about everything” Everything in our prayer life changes when we believe that God is good, that God is a “rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” and that He is completely and totally trustworthy and faithful. THEN peace. I am in training in this area as well. Thank goodness for His forbearance and fatihfulness.. that He never gives up on me and encourages me each day to seek Him more.

  6. We read this today in the NLT ” 5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.” This is an excellent passage to meditate on during this season. We know that the tiem is short and that the best raiment we can wear is a heart of gratitude, worship and praise in submission, true submission to the Lord.

  7. “Be fruitful” and blessed in all that you do today. Love and hugs in Christ. This daily study has been such a wonderful life line. Each day now the peace and confidence in the Lord has been growing. Thanks for faithfully walking this leg of the journey with me. It has been such an anchor in a profoundly confusing and busy time.
