1 Timothy 5:23
“Don’t drink only water. You ought to drink a little wine for the sake of your stomach because you are sick so often.”
For some Timothy’s tummy troubles lead them to think that sometimes we should be using other modalities to address health concerns and that God’s approval is on these solutions. I cannot speak for God. However, what I will point out only briefly, is that this verse happened after Jesus’ ascension.
Only Jesus expressed God perfectly and even when He was on earth, there is a biblical example of him being unable to do miracles because of the unbelief of people. It is important to note, that even in this environment He did heal some sick people by laying on of hands. (See Mark 6:5-6) There is also an example of when the disciples failed to heal the sick but Jesus succeeded. (Mark 9:14-29). If Jesus had not been there, the boy would not have been healed.
Our understanding and obedience is imperfect. I can only point to my last post and lay the blame where I believe that it lies… Imperfect people can only express God incompletely or imperfectly. But to one with faith, all things are possible. I believe that if Timothy had had this tummy trouble while Jesus was on earth. that no one would have been recommending wine, that he would have been healed and the wine redundant. This is my opinion only. However, there isn’t one single biblical account that I know of where Jesus refused to heal the sick or failed to heal the sick and many that indicate He healed them all.
For me this verse about Timothy is actually very helpful in helping us to acknowledge the limitations of man versus the perfect expression of God through Christ.
Think again on John 14:12 and stand in awe that we are able to do all that Christ did and greater things… The Bible says that we can, are we willing to press in and with and only in God’s help, wisdom, revelation and power, overcome every obstacle that hinders us?
