Anyone else familiar with this verse..    God has set me straight as I had in my humanness added a little extra word that totally changed the meaning.   I thought that this meant that love overlooks, covers up, a multitude of sins. Here is the verse that brought me enlightenment. James 5:19-20

Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;²⁰ Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.“

When you dig a little more and consider Matthew 18:15-17:

Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.¹⁶ But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.¹⁷ And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.”

So it turns out God calls leading a brother or sister back into Truth, exposing the sin, is actually what is meant by this hiding/covering.  Amazing how different it can look when you here God’s description of what He means. How perfectly consistent with Provebs 3:12

For the Lordcorrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.”
