Eternal life…what’s the point?

What is the purpose of Eternal life?  When does eternal life start?

I have started reading more resources from Andrew Wommack and am wonderfully challenged each time I read.

On a little side note, Praise God for loving hubby’s who are willing to stay home and give Mom’s time to rest and catch up on some r and r (rest and reading in my books house).

John 3:16 (KJV)

“16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

John 17:3 (KJV)

“3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

For some reason, our focus on eternity isn’t really about what it is, but rather what it isn’t.    For so many of us it simply means escaping hell and eternal torment.   But here in this verse, we see the main point.   To know God and Jesus Christ.

The book I am reading is called “A Better Way to Pray”.  Andrew Wommack’s answer is that we are eternal beings the moment we are born again and therefore,  living for eternity, knowing God better as the core reason for our existence, starts then/now.

So simple.. so easy to miss it…

I have had this little plaque on my fridge since I was baptised…  “The number one reason to pray is to KNOW GOD”.    Well seven years later, it is finally sinking in.   THANK YOU LORD!!!!   His patience is too awesome for words.

Understanding our birthrights as children of God….

I have been asking God for some clarification on the “once saved always saved” issue. As I was speaking to a pastor here in town yesterday, he referred me to his teaching.

I found it to be very interesting, and will be looking up all the scriptures.. I found His discussion about the elders and the multitude in Revelations particularly interesting.

This starts in Revelation 4
“And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.

8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,

10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

And Revelations 7 talks about the multitude
“After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.

11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,

12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?

14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.

16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.

17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”

dead works…. what exactly are these? (Repentance from Dead Works, the 1st Doctrine of Christ)

Now this is something I would love the answer to. In reading Hebrews 6, the first doctrine of Christ is “Repentance from dead works”. So the question that follows is: What exactly are these? The term is used only in Hebrews in this exact turn of phrase (see also Hebrews 9). I am beginning to suspect that anything that bears no fruit for the Kingdom of God is what these refer to. The parable of the two sons who were asked by their father to go out to work in the fields.

Matthew 21:28-40(KJV)
“28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.”

I think I was sucked into the idea that sin was something you did that was bad. I have changed my thoughts though. I know believe that sin, in the very core of what it means, is simply not being obedient to God. This includes those promptings like “I should really eat better/healthier foods” as you dive into another “big mac” and eat it anyways. Or thoughts like, “Oh, I don’t think God would like this movie… but I don’t want to make a scene by getting up and leaving midway through”… The variations are vast and come in a plethora of colours and tones. The worst ones to spot are the ones that seem godly, but really are all form and pomp with no heart or leading in them. Sometimes it is simply choosing to serve in the area of the church that you enjoy, instead of the area in which God called you too. Without the Word and discerning of the Holy Spirit, the flesh drives so strongly that it becomes impossible to follow the gentle leading of the Spirit.  Once again I can thank God that the answer is Jesus Christ and that I can make some choices that will “let” Him do everything for me if I am willing to do the “completely doable right now for me today in whatever state I happen to be in ” part.   A few scriptures to start as I have a feeling this is going to be one of those ongoing revelations.

Psalm 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

Once we are saved, we can “let the Spirit renew our thoughts and attitudes” Ephesians 4:23

2 Corinthians 7:1 (NLT)
“7 Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.”

Defining grace…. scripturally speaking

I think the grace of God is one of the hardest things for any person to fully wrap their head around. At this time, I would say it is most likely impossible to fathom it fully for its depth and complexity. This doesn’t seem to keep us all from trying though. So I thought it might be an interesting adventure and study to start to put together the scriptures that seem to express some aspect of grace.

As a little side note, I find a Concordance to be an invaluable resource for Bible study as it gives you the specific original greek or hebrew word in the very sentence you are reading.  Often, there are more than one greek or hebrew word, with different definitions that are all translated to one single english word.  Hence, there is much that can be lost and confused in the translation.  But a Concordance helps fill in some of those gaps.

To start, I thought it would be good to have the definition of the actual word grace.

Here is the Strong’s Concordance definition for the Greek Word grace (in the KJV, this is the same greek word every time it is translated into English)

(5485)

ca>riv, khar’-ece; from (5463) (cai>rw); graciousness (as

gratifying

), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude): —  acceptable, benefit, favour, gift, grace (-ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank (-s, -worthy).

Where the confusion has come in is that one of the Hebrew (I say one as in Hebrew there is more than original Hebrew Word that is translated as grace into English) definitions “the unmerited favour of God” has been adopted and used throughout the Bible both Old and New Testament wise.   There is no doubt that part of grace includes unmerited favour as the scriptures themselves spell this out.   But we must faithfully apply the actual meaning of the greek word to understand the word grace when we see it in the New Testament in the context of the scriptures in which it is found.

Two scriptures to start:

Philippians 2:12-16 (AMP)

“12 Therefore, my dear ones, as you have always obeyed [my suggestions], so now, not only [with the enthusiasm you would show] in my presence but much more because I am absent, work out (cultivate, carry out to the goal, and fully complete) your own salvation with reverence and awe and trembling (self-distrust, with serious caution, tenderness of conscience, watchfulness against temptation, timidly shrinking from whatever might offend God and discredit the name of Christ).

13 [Not in your own strength] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction anddelight.

14 Do all things without grumbling and faultfinding and complaining [against God] and questioning and doubting [among yourselves],

15 That you may show yourselves to be blameless and guileless, innocent and uncontaminated, children of God without blemish (faultless, unrebukable) in the midst of a crooked and wicked generation [spiritually perverted and perverse], among whom you are seen as bright lights (stars or beacons shining out clearly) in the [dark] world,

16 Holding out [to it] and offering [to all men] the Word of Life, so that in the day of Christ I may have something of which exultantly to rejoice and glory in that I did not run my race in vain or spend my labor to no purpose.”

Ephesians 2:8-10 (NLT)

“8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

For me, what jumped out was that the purpose of our redemption and outpouring of His grace is so that we can do “the good things He planned for us long ago”.  This is reflected in the Philippians verse “at work in you (energizing and creating in you the power and desire) both to will and to work for HIS GOOD PLEASURE and SATISFACTION and DELIGHT”   It seems to me that God doesn’t do these things so that we can have a better self-focussed life but rather to equip us and prepare in every single area for serving and living with a God-centred, God serving life.

Have you ever heard someone ask “which came first, the chicken or the egg?”?  I don’t  when or where I heard this but somehow I know it is just one of those questions floating out there that people say there is no sure answer to.   The Bible says that God made the birds with the ability to reproduce (Genesis 1) so for me the issue is settled.   The Bird came first and then laid the egg.

I believe that salvation comes first, as a free gift as Ephesians 2 spells out.   And that grace comes part and parcel, but that it in part specifically given to us so that we will have the desire, power and ability to do what pleases God and no longer live for ourselves and OUR good pleasure.  Something to think about hey?

Letting our roots grow…

A little/big revelation…    This is one of my favourite verses as it helps me to stand against one of my most terrible fleshly tendencies…  “busy”ness.

Ephesians 3:16-18 “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. 17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. 18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is”

Big revelations, what is continually in motion can’t grow roots.

1.Busyness, just plain being busy all the time, isn’t it one of the enemy’s very favourite ways to keep us preoccupied and away from and out of the Word and truths of God.     We are all so busy with our own selves, entertaining ourselves, working to pay for our “Stuff”, trying to give our children everything, running from hockey to dance to etc… keeping up with friends, work, church involvement etc… even classes at the church.  Running from one thing to the next.   I know that I have taken several excellent courses at the church and yet I have forgotten almost everything from each one of these courses as nothing really had the time to sink in.

2.  It takes time for the truth of God to get into our hearts, first we need to hear it, then we need to park on it for a while, chew on it, meditate on it and really really embrace it before it is really understood and gets into our hearts, in this way our roots can grow down deep into the promises of God in any given area and once there down deep, they are there to stay.

I have spoken with several people in our class, and this seems to be a theme.   Take a course, get encouraged for a time, and before one is done have our eyes already focussed on the next course…    and never quite feeling satisfied or really getting the truth in a lasting way…

Some thoughts anyways.. God keep telling me to slow down and soak it in, really get it before moving on, …

God’s love language

This was a pondering I had some time ago that popped into my head again today….

Do you remember that book the 5 Love Languages that was popular a few years back?   I was thinking today about what the Bible tells us is God’s love language.   The premise of the book was it is our job to study and figure out what the other person’s love language is and then love on them that way, as our tendency is to love other’s in the language we like to be loved in.  The punchline is if we love someone, we love them in their language, this takes effort as very often that is different than what we would do naturally.  It also mentions it is one of the reasons are offerings of affections aren’t always received so well by our spouse.

I was thinking are we loving God in His language or ours?  I think this is something that I need to learn more about and would love to find more scriptures about how God likes to be loved.
Lisa
some scriptures that came to mind

A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”  Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.” – John 21:17 (NLT)

15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. 18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. 19 Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. 20 When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.” – John 14:15-21

“Thou shalt love (agapao) the Lord thy God with all thy  heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great  commandment.” – Matthew 22:37-39

“They come unto Thee… and they sit before Thee… and they hear  Thy words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love,  but their heart goes after [other things].” – Ezekiel 33:31,

“If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take  up his cross, and follow me” –Matthew 16:24

signposts…. a follow up to blessings vs commands.

Signpost

Signpost (Photo credit: Peter Nijenhuis)

Psalm 25:4-8 “Show me the right path, O Lord;  point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me,  for you are the God who saves me.  All day long I put my hope in you. Remember, O Lord, your compassion and unfailing love, which you have shown from long ages past. Do not remember the rebellious sins of my youth.  Remember me in the light of your unfailing love,  for you are merciful, O Lord.  The Lord is good and does what is right;  he shows the proper path to those who go astray.”

Today more of a rambling… hoping this makes sense. So i have this great visual in my head of this whole every command  of God actually being blessing.  The Word describes following God as walking on a path, neither veering to the left or the right.  I am finding that in life, there are these constant crossroads that we hit where a decision and a course of action must take place.

English: Signpost by 'The Winkie' The sign giv... If you start by picturing a sign post at any intersection with 2 to x number of signs and arrows pointing in various directions, you might be picturing what I am seeing.  Here is the great part, wherever you are, if you look to the Word you will find the sign post lovingly and left specifically to guide you through the very moment you find yourself in.   On each sign, the various options laid out in those verses can be found.   There is always at least one that point clearly and decisively to God’s will, way and plan, by appearances, it may look like the least appealing, most difficult road to travel.  It reads, “to blessings/the Way”.  The remainder read “to curses” and of course there is always the third option, to leave all paths and forge your own, which always lands you of course, in the wilderness, deep forest etc…   When you zoom out of this and look at it from above, you will see the most wonderful and complex map.   Every point on that map has a signpost (a decision point) that can take you from wherever you are, back to being on “the way”.   But you can also clearly see that if you step off “the way” to the left or the right even a little, you would find yourself immediately off the path.

Here is the point, I believe that God left us His Word as a love letter but also to give us clear directions how to stay on His path.   Pre-sin, the road was relatively clear to see, but by very definition, sin blinds us, snares us, lays pitfalls and snares at our feet endlessly and lures us off the right path onto other paths that look good but end in death.  As we can’t “see” this path with our senses, He has provided for us by leaving clear directions for every possible scenario we can find ourselves in.   Our human reasoning and temptation comes along regularly to try to lure us off the path.   How much harder it becomes to see the right path as each additional alternative path clouds are vision and tempts us to take another way.  Needless to say, the more complicated the situation, the more desperately we need to search God’s Word to find the right way.  It isn’t that the signposts aren’t there and easy enough to see and understand, it simply that we continually let our senses and reasonings convince us that another “way” would be better, more efficient, more successful etc.    Oh that we would completely trust the clearly laid out path the Lord has left for us.Road

a thought… why isn’t is obvious who is a believer and who is not?

Somehow, the life a of a disciple to Christ Jesus should look so radically different, at least that’s a thought that has passed through my head several times. Today the immediate thought afterwards was, isn’t God’s mercy incredible. Because if we all faced immediate consequence as in the case of Annanias and Sephira, for lying about their offering to God, as in the case with Aaron’s sons, who were struck dead for using the wrong incense, or as in the case of Adam and Eve,who each were banished from the garden with a specific, ongoing generational consequence that we are still reeling from today… we would all be dead. The truth is that the same sin that brings consequence into unbelievers life, brings consequences into ours..

So here is yet observation for today. There is a very clear biblical cycle. I was reminded of this while watching the presidential inauguration prayer breakfast. It looks something like this. There is one relatively righteous generation that gets blessed abundantly, not because they are perfect, but because they get their hearts right with God, and I mean to the point of actually obeying His Word whole heartedly. Then this is followed by a series of unfaithful generations… and things get worse and worse and worse until they get so bad, that God takes radical action. So all the generations in between could falsely get the impression that God doesn’t care, that He isn’t keeping track, and that they will escape the consequences. I can only speak for me, but I can confess that I have looked to a person’s life before to gage if they are blessed or cursed. But the above being true, this is truly one of the easiest ways to be deceived into thinking just because the consequence isn’t visible, it isn’t surely coming. Oh Father, just get my eyes off of people altogether, In Jesus name.

A Blessing or a Command?

I thank God for all friends who get me thinking about what the Word really says… In studying Genesis 1, those words spoken to Adam and Eve…. vs 22 “And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply…” are apparently the source of quite a theological debate. Theology is not however within my sphere of influence. I want the heart and core of it. And here is the new conclusion I am at.

Aren’t every single one of God’s commands a blessing for us?

?
?
?
?

Each one is given as a gift to tell us the godly way to live, which is the only way to live in peace, joy, rest, love and with all the provision of God.

My thoughts for today anyways.
